Description: A hand-drawn copy of a topographic map of P.W.D. survey plan 8554 for the proposed route of the railway line from Paekakariki to Wareroa clearing in the Horowhenua on the Foxton line. In two areas an alternative railway line is drawn and all railway lines, not recommended and recommended, are referred to in a reference key. A cross sectional plan of the same area is included. Description: There is a hand-written index inside the back cover, headed "A.G. Tibbutt, Victoria Studio, Hamilton, Feb. 14, 1907" and inscribed "To Fred & Mary, Nelson". At the end of the index it reads "Further albumns [sic] of views on sale". Fourteen coloured photographs taken during construction of the Raurimu Spiral, between 1898 and 1907. Photographs include Raurimu Town, the main street; the service road at Oio; bridge on the service road at Oio; a "miniature Niagara", Oio service road; the horse-shoe bend, Raurimu; snowed up in Raurimu; canvas-town at Raurimu; bullocks at work; skids moving trees in bush at Kakahi; model camp for the Maketoti [Makatote] Viaduct; Ruapehu from the viaduct; a young boy "the young bushman"; and "Old age & youth (one of Tibbutt's first Maori pictures"). Description: A topographic map includes the upper and lower sections of the railway line in the area leading up to the Pukerua saddle, part of the North Island main trunk railway. The map covers the area from the fourteen to fifteen mile mark and this milage runs from Porirua Crossing side towards Paekakariki. Gradients are included on the upper section of the line. The line passes through heavy bush and a clearing and is adjacent to a swamp. A track is marked criss-crossing both the upper and lower lines. The lower diagram is of a cross section of the upper and lower lines up to the Pukerua Saddle, including gradients. Notes state: Line 200ft. above datum for 1 in 90, and, Line 250ft. above datum for 1 in 66. Map signed by W. Hill, 20-11-[18]80. Note on bottom right of map states: P.W.D. 8411 cancelled. Description: Photocopy of P.W.D. 15140 map on two sheets, showing trial lines of routes of railway lines, the adopted one being marked in blue on the original map which appears to be the North Island main trunk line. Abandoned and original trial lines for proposed routes of railways are marked and include the appropriate P.W.D. numbers as do the notes referring to the beginning and end of the survey of R.A. Brown's road. The Wanganui, Manuia and Whakapapa Rivers are named as are some tracks. The Waimarino Plains are marked and some terrain is described as 'broken bush country' and 'totara bush'. Description: One photocopy of the map cover and four photocopies of P.W.D. survey plan 8555 comprising Sheets 1, 4, 7, 8. Sheets 2, 3, 5 and 6 were not copied. Sheet 1 is of the proposed route of the railway line from the 20 mile mark at Paekakariki to the 21 mile mark. Sheet 4 is from the 23 to 24 mile mark. Sheet 7 is from the 26 mile mark, near Paraparaumu, to the 27 mile mark. Sheet 8 is from the 27 to 28 mile mark. The starting point of this mileage is the Wellington Main Station. Includes references to telegraph lines and the site of the Paekakariki Station, watercourses - dry in summer and the relief of each area. The location of Lynch's is marked. A cross sectional plan of the same area is included with references to level crossings, watercourses, box drain and pipe sizes, streamlet pipes and streams to be diverted.
