Description: Album of photographs, some prints, some contacts from 35mm film, taken by Professor John Salmon in Wellington. Most of the images describe his use of different camera lenses and filters. Many of the scenes are taken from Professor Salmon's window at Victoria University of Wellington, showing different moods in different weather patterns. They include early morning, afternoon, and night views, northerly wind and southerly wind cloud patterns, including a southerly storm. He also has a large number of images of Wellington Harbour and wharves, again taken in different lights, showing ships, reflections and buildings. Other sequences show views of the Hutt Valley, Silverstream, and Glenmore Street in Wellington, many taken on misty early mornings. Description: Photographs relating to Herbert Spackman and his family and relatives, chiefly taken by him. Places include views of Wellington and bays, Eketahuna and the Wanganui district. Very few of the people shown are fully identified but are likely to be Harry Spackman’s: mother (Eliza Spackman, nee Hawkings), father (Henry Spackman), brother, mother-in-law (Mrs Coxall, mother of Harry’s first wife Amy), and father-in-law (Mr Parnell, father of Fanny Parnell, Harry's second wife). Several houses are shown, including: ‘Rangiuru’, located at 63 Hutt Road, Petone, Wellington; House of Eketahuna farmer David S Lowe; House of David S Lowe’s brother Henry (‘Harry’) Goold Spackman in Wanganui, both interior and exterior, ‘Ben Venuto’ situated at 59 Rintoul Street and house of Henry (‘Harry’) Goold Spackman in Wellington, both interior and exterior views. Description: Album created by Nancy Jobson, the first principal of Queen Margaret College when it opened in Hobson Street in 1919. Photographs have captions, listing various staff members, including Miss Fyfe, Miss Gold, Miss Irving and Miss Naylor; pupils listed only with Christian names; and interior and exterior views of the school. Activities and outings are shown, including celebrations around Peace Day, with a visit on board HMS New Zealand (showing gun turrets, decks, and views from the wharf), banners and processions; picnics at the beach; trips to Kapiti Island; and pupils dressed for a performance of the Merchant of Venice. Description: Album containing many contacts from 35mm film, as well as black and white prints of differing sizes, taken by Professor John Tenison Salmon. He takes particular interest in the flora and fauna of New Zealand, the damaging effects of road construction, erosion from bush felling, and destruction caused by introduced species including deer. There are huge collections of close-up images of various plants (only a few of which are listed above), including flowers, leaves and seeds. He comments on mangrove swamps at Tauranga, which are growing at the furthest point from the Equator possible for them to exist. The other important collection shows various stages in the life cycle of insects and animals, including wetas, katydids, different types of moths, mosquitoes, bees, stick insects, and native New Zealand frogs (Hochstetter's frogs) (p. 91-92). Photographs relating to wetas include scenes of ovipositor tracks of cave wetas in the mud in Waitomo Caves; different varieties of wetas including cave wetas; and weta nests. In 1935 he photographed two Australian species of lizards which he found in the yard of the Dominion Museum, the Australia crested dragon, and the Australian blue-tongued lizard. Many of these photographs were taken on a photomicroscope, including photographs of rock sections (p. 72-75), and photographs of insects and larvae. There are also views of his photomicrosope equipment. Professor Salmon worked at Victoria University, and there are numbers of "contaflex" views of Wellington from his office window, taken to demonstrate the use of various filters (p. 26-29). There are also images of Professor Salmon in his study lab in April 1955; and further images of him in the Entomological Department of the Dominion Museum. Page 35 has views of a science exhibition organised by the Wellington Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand held in the Wellington Town Hall, 12-14 April 1948. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
