Date: 1844

From: [Angas, George French] 1822-1886 :[Sketchbook 1844]

By: Angas, George French, 1822-1886

Reference: A-020-011

Description: Shows a crouching woman with a moko and red earrings. The reference to Mana is presumably to Mana Island, visited by the artist around this date. One of Rangihaeata's daughters was Topeora, named after Te Rangihaeata's younger sister Te Rangi Topeora, aka Kuini, and this is likely to be her portrait By 1844 Topeora would have been adult (she married to Te Hiko te Rangi, a son of Te Pehi Kupe) but later died at an unspecified time. There were no known issue from this marriage. The text is not fully legible and the title could read 'daughter of Rauparaha'; however the fact that Rangihaeata had a daughter with a name that nearly matched 'Taupaora' suggests that Rangihaeata is the correct interpretation Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil 238 x 203 mm
