Description: A cadastral map of rural and suburban sections open for sale and selection of the area from Lake Horowhenua to Koputuroa Road, and bounded by the Kawiu and Makomako Roads. This cadastral map has numbered sections, some coloured, and include acreages and owners' names handwritten in some sections. The Wellington - Manawatu Railway is marked as are a school and a waterworks reserve. Streets and the Koputuroa Stream are named. The base maps are of sections in the Blocks I, II & VI, Waiopehu Survey District. Sections marked with red are large settlements open for sale or selection and are referred to in a key. Schedule of the suburban sections and rural lands in this district include the section number, acreage, value and rent. Terms and conditions of sale or selection of the Levin village settlement include the statement 'Drawn by F.J. Hales'. Includes a written description of rural land and the application date of 18 March 1889 at the Crown Lands Office, Wellington and includes J.W.A. Marchant's name. Enlargement of original. `Diary of a journey to Taupo, Rotorua, Rangitikei from Taranaki' by S. Percy Smith, (New Plymouth, 1858) was republished as 'An 1858 journey into the interior' by S. Description: A collection of map information from various sources from 1858-1892. The maps no. 1-6 and 8 contain information from Native Land Court plans of the 1880's, Survey Office road plans, Lands and Survey's first amendment (Mr Cussen's topographical survey), a map by S. Percy Smith, and the Sub-Atlas committee. The information has been added in different pens and hand writing eg "Plan marked from Hokianga" or "no track here shown by Mr Cussen". The map marked no. 7 shows military information from the New Zealand wars eg "Troops to be sent to Waikaremoana via Ahikereru - Ruatahuna Huiarau from Taupo". Shows some native tracks eg "from Heruiwi" and corrections or previous omissions. Map no. 9 shows tracks on N.L.C. plans, one of which "is away at the Court". The maps show very little signs of any settlement, except No. 3 and 6 "Tapuaeharuru Pa" and "Te Pueto Stn". A mission station, a native settlement and a school are also indicated. The maps cover the region from Hokianga, Kawhia Harbour, Mokau River, Waikato River, Tirau, Taupo to Rotorua on maps 1-6, 8 and Rotorua to Waikaremoana to Poverty Bay on maps 7 and [9]. All maps depict rivers. Map 7 and [9] are maps with annotations. They are on the published base map "Four-mile sheet, No. 10" (Wellington, New Zealand Lands and Surveys, 1935). Description: The sketch of the Patea district extends from the Kaupokonui Stream on the Waimate Plain to the Patea River which includes areas of military settlements and Native Reserves. Settlements, tracks, a redoubt, a camp and an old mission station, rivers and Gent. Chute's Track is named. Includes the name of Bradshaw, possibly at the site of his house. Te Ngatu o Te Manu is now a park area situated between the Kapuni and Inaha Stream in the Taranaki Region. The sketch shows the clearings of Te Maru and Te Ngatu o Te Manu in an area of heavy bush with a track between the two places and passing through an unnamed cleared area. Within the clearing of Te Maru is Ouru Creek and the track to the settlement of Te Ngatu o Te Manu which includes sites of buildings, sites of three clearings, a whare, tracks, two of which are named 'Track to Te Kauae' and 'To Ruaaruru'. Some clearings include notes stating 'with burnt stumps and felled trees'. Another sketch showing Te Ngutu o te Manu and Te Maru clearings = MapColl-832.2hkm/[ca.1868]/Acc.1926 is the duplicate copy. The second copy of this map is not linen backed. Catalogue card states that Charles Heaphy drew these maps. No authority for this information given. Handwritten note states 'S.P. Smith in diary 29 October 1866 states he was asked by Governor Grey to make a map of this area. This is probably his'.
