Description: An album probably created, and chiefly photographed by George William Barltrop, between 1872 (one image of the laying of the foundation stone of (?) Provincial Buildings in 1872), and the rest being views of New Zealand taken in the late 1890s. One sequence of images shows St Thomas' Church (Newtown, Wellington) under construction, and both exterior and interior views when finished, in 1895. One image shows the wreck of the SS Wairarapa in 1894, and there are views of several lighthouses around New Zealand, two of which were taken by the Burton Brothers. A number of scenes are taken in the Nelson area, including several of the Dun Mountain railway (for the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company), the Maitai River and valley, Nelson City, and Washington Valley. Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working. Description: Photographs of: a group of people gathered to watch sports on the Queen's Birthday in Tonga including Seddon; a view of the coast at Cape Foulwind; a letter addressed to "Sire Sedone, Pirima, Neuseland" from Niue; a gathering of Tongans outside a marquee in Nuku'alofa for the Queen's birthday celebrations; Seddon and what are probably other parliamentarians standing on the steps of a building; a large totara; the Seddon family on a visit to the state schoolhouse in Levuka, Fiji; the Seddon family gathered round an ornately framed certificate noting Seddon's achievements; Huka Falls taken by the Burton Brothers; Seddon holding a taiaha seated in a group of seven working men; the recreation ground in New Plymouth looking towards Mount Taranaki; two portraits of Samoan girls; a cart travelling on the Cable Bay Road looking out over the bay taken by Tyree Studio; Lake Taupo from Motutere taken by Burton Brothers; and a group of men, possibly including Seddon, sitting and standing on the steps of a building. Description: Album created by G E Mannering, some photographs taken by him. A number of these are of children, only identified by nick-names, or Christian names; and one of an older man in a top hat is named `Grandad'. Several views of the children are taken at the beach at New Brighton in 1893. An interior photograph of an office `The consulting desk' was taken by `HMP'. Photographs also include a scene of hay making, and several of scenes relating to sheep farming, including sheep drafting, and one of 120 bales of wool from `Double Hill Estate' loaded onto four wagons, towed by W.A. McLaren's traction engine. Other scenes in Christchurch include the Christchurch Cathedral; and early photographs of Christ's College, when the buildings were in `corrugated iron Tudor' style; and a house with a century plant (agave americana) in the foreground. The rest of the scenes are mixed, with a few tourist scenes of Maori outside a meeting house, and a group in a hot spring at Tokaanu, and a newspaper cutting with photograph of Rewi Maniapoto from the Christchurch Press (no date). Description: Photograph album of New Zealand scenes The first sequence contains views of the road from Christchurch to the West Coast, taken by Daniel Mundy in February 1868. Another group are of further scenes in the South Island taken by the Burton Brothers around the Dunedin area. There are several views of Scotland and England, including one of the Brendon Hill Incline, an iron-mining area in Exmoor, and a view of the Larkworthy family castle in Aberdeenshire (name of the castle not clear in album). Later views in the album are taken by unidentified photographers, and include scenes of the Franz Josef Glacier, with the Waiho River; sluicing for gold at Black Gully; a tubular flume at Donnellys Creek; the Totara Ferry; viaduct at Jones' Creek; bush at Donoghues; and views of Ross and Hokitika. Description: Photograph albums entitled 'Views of New Zealand', containing Burton Bros photographs of New Zealand scenes, as well as views in Tonga and Samoa. These island views include one of Princess Anaziene (grand-daughter of King Tupou I of Tonga) outside the palace at Nukualofa; another taken near Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu; one of Neiafu (Vava'u, Tonga); and one in Apia, Samoa. Places in in the North Island of New Zealand include the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera Eruption of 1886; Mangarewa Gorge (named as Mongarewa Gorge in the album); Rotokanapanapa, Lake Rotomahana; and Waiwera with the Waiwera Hotel centre left. The South Island images show Lake Moke; Wet Jacket Arm; Passage Point Cove in Dusky Sound; and Cabbage Tree Grove (Halfway Bay, Lake Wakatipu) in which a log hut with thatched roof is seen behind a large flax bush, surrounded by cabbage trees.
