Description: Dismissed carpenters march along Queen Street, Auckland, 22 February 1949, protesting at the result of a dispute with the Auckland Master Builders' Association that left them unemployed. Photographer unidentified. Original caption from the New Zealand Free Lance, March 2. 1949, page 25 reads: Auckland Carpenters' Protest. After a meeting in the Town Hall, Auckland, which about 1,200 carpenters attended to hear speakers trace the history of the dispute with the Auckland Master Builders' Association, about 700 dismissed carpenters marched down Queen Street and up to Albert Park. Description: Watercolour shows the south Wairarapa coast, possibly near Te Kopi looking west from near Cape Palliser, with dwellings and probably a whaling station (Wades Whaling Station? as mentioned in the Wellington Spectator of 1844 - quoted in Mita Carter's "Early Palliser Bay" (1982)) in the centre. Several men stand on the steep hillside at the right. The foreground terrain is covered with low scrub. Entitled "Whaling station, Palliser Bay, Wairarapa" in McArthur's August 1987 auction catalogue. Dated from other views of the same area. Original owner was William Edmund James Bullock who received a Crown Grant in 1883 of 97 acres (now Lot 1 DP 18732 Ngaere Survey District). The land has passed down through the female line of the family to the present owner Jackie Harrison and her husband Rod who purchased the dairy farm in Skeet Road, Matapu in 2003.
