Description: View from the south end of Paihia Beach, probably in the 1840s, looking north along the beach with a row of houses at the foot of the hill to the left. Several Maori with their canoes are on shore, and a food storage platform appears outside the fenced area surrounding the European houses. Includes William Williams' house, a two-storied residence, built of stone and mortar, with 3 dormer windows, burnt down 15 Feb. 1856 Catalogued by both Sotheby's and McArthur's as the work of Cuthbert Clarke. However on both stylistic and handwriting grounds (c.f. Merrett's work in A.T.L. and the British Library), the work appears to be by Merrett. Description: A view from the southern end of Ocean Beach, better known as St Clair Beach, or Second Beach, of the newly-built Cargill's Castle ('the Cliffs'), sitting atop the cliff. A large outbuilding can be seen to the west of the house. The painting is taken from the dunes of the beach, and the figures of people, including one on a horse, are visible 'The Cliffs' was completed in 1877. Later images show the extensive planting in front of the house, which was built in concrete to withstand the elements. A red-coated soldier leans against the door to Barrett's Hotel. A small rowboat is in the sea to the right of the road Title on engraved plate on frame. Artist attributed because of similarity of subject to Holmes' "Wellington Beach 1856" (A-032-040). The work is not as finished as that one however. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
