Description: Reg Shaw was born in Leeds, Yorkshire in 1904. Recalls his parents and the family's emigration to New Zealand in 1908. Describes his father's work as a builder, employment with Walter Graham and Sons in Christchurch and move to Wanganui in 1917. Recalls that this was to enable his father, Ben Shaw, to supervise the construction of the Sarjeant Gallery on behalf of Walter Graham. Describes living at 48 Somme Parade since 1917. Discusses early plans for a harbour in Wanganui and the transporting of frozen meat from the freezing works to ships. Discusses the Sarjeant Gallery and its construction from Oamaru stone. Recalls the opening of the Gallery and his father's role as a stonemason. Explains the history and construction of the Durie Hill Tower and the transporting of stones for it on a togo up the river. Describes the Tower's construction with a trammel and the fact that the construction was not finished as originally planned. Explains his interest in the motor mechanic industry in Wanganui, apprenticeship at Chevannes Garage and partnership with Ozzie Allen. Recalls his time in the Army. Describes becoming an insurance assessor, playing `too much sport' and Lodge involvement. Talks about marrying Connie Carvell in 1933, his children Peter, Brian and Graham and his father living with them for 23 years. Notes that he has his licence at the age of 98. Description: Ted Hill was born in Birmingham, England in 1920. Recalls his mother's death when he was six years old and several housekeepers. Describes being interested in singing and painting as a child and leaving school at the age of fourteen. Describes his father's death from an accident when he was sixteen. Talks about working for an accounting firm and then for his uncle's building business where he learnt about drawing, buildings and surveying. Discusses joining the army in 1940, being accepted for officer training and going to the north west frontier of India. Gives a detailed description of his time in India, becoming a parachutist, and being sent to Imphal where the Japanese were driven out. Recalls rethinking his direction after the war and doing a course in architecture at Art School in Birmingham. Describes the battle between classical and modern architecture at the time. Recalls his first job in Birmingham and a subsequent job in London. Mentions marriage and divorce before coming to New Zealand in 1958. Recalls Ministry of Works architects Frank Stewart, Gordon Wilson, Warwick Keen, Neville Burren, Jock Beere and the `Tomato House' in Wellington. Recalls his first job on an office accommodation block and doing working drawings for the Government Print Office. Discusses the role of Ned Blake Kelly in this project. Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1957 to 2006. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Includes photographs of buildings, mainly commercial premises, in Wellington and Wanganui, 1957-1959. Also contains images of two old farm cottages in the Wairarapa, a tree house in Paihiatua, a car yard in Petone, and a shop reusing ammunition boxes from World War II as a flowerbed in Palmerston North. A number of photographs from 2002 document the protest around the building of the inner city bypass in Wellington. These images feature Tonks Avenue, protestors, affected buildings, an individual who was to be being evicted, and protest art. Two 2006 mages show demolition on Kensington Lane. Images of people include two women drinking beer in Ohingaiti, a motorcycle family in Turangi, and young children climing on a wooden sculpture in Porirua. A series of Maori carvings in public spaces includes sculptures on the Petone Foreshore, in Te Rauparaha Park, Porirua, and Tokaanu.
