Description: New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark is piloting a disintegrating plane labelled 'Air NZ'. The left engine, labelled 'Ansett' has broken off. Exhibition caption reads - In early September 2001, when Ansett Australia was jettisoned by Air New Zealand, the New Zealand government was accused, particularly in Australia, of dithering over assisting with the restructuring of Air New Zealand. The airline had bought half of Ansett from TNT in 1996 and the remaining 50% from News Corp in early 2000 for an inflated amount. Inadequate due diligence complicated by poor company records, additional competition in Australian skies, the grounding of planes, greatly increased fuel costs, the need for fleet replacement, and overstaffing all contributed to Ansett's losses spiralling out of control. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation.
