Remedial treatment camps for unfit men

Description: Most of the photographs relate to the remedial treatment camp set up in Rotorua. On the first page, the photographs are flanked by newspaper cuttings about another camp set up for the same purpose at Papakura, Auckland. The photographs on this page may relate to the Papakura camp. Most of the photographs are of groups of men doing various forms of excersise, and playing sport. There are group photographs of men in military uniform and others of groups posing with tennis raquets and medicine balls. Other photographs record the launch of "Bonds for Bombers" campaign in Rotorua, March 1942, and the ANZAC parade 1942 (also Rotorua). There are seven original cartoon drawings of military personnel by Stenberg. These were used in the Rotorua camp's newspaper. The photographs are supported by many newspaper cuttings about the camps and their purpose. There is a photograph relating to the camp newspaper "The Arawa Guerilla" and two copies of the paper are pasted onto the same page. Other newspaper cuttings and two programmes relate to a very successful entertainment developed by the men in the Rotorua camp. This was "Splitzkreig Army Review" which from September 1942 to March 1943 toured the upper North Island and raised 2,000 pounds for the Patriotic Fund. Remedial treatment camps were set up for men who had been judged by the military medical authorities as unfit for military service, but whoes ailments were considered curable. Examples of the sorts of conditions treated are knee problems, flat feet, \"underdevelopment,\" nervous conditions, and chronic backache. The Rotorua camp occupied Arawa Park, and the racecourse. Description: Photographs of people and their occupations, made for publication in the New Zealand Free Lance in 1939 and 1940. Includes photographs made to accompany stories relating to: Whitebaiting, floods, hedgehogs, movie extras and a Plimmerton fisherman. Also includes photographs of Kauri gum being weighed, lace being made, a cattle auction, handloom weaving, mussel dredging in the Coromandel, installation of the Lowburn Dredge, a homemade diving suit, a power pole in Russell, rural scenes in Hamilton. Includes the oldest blacksmith in New Zealand, a waterwheel in the Carrick Ranges, lapidiaries, a car with a gasometer, Kauri carvings, a farmer repairing a fence, water bicycles, a tower of matches. Also an unusual carrot, pony traction, a travelling repairman, North Auckland Inlet transport, a postman, a whitewashed mining cottage in Arrowtown, a model railway. Description: Named sailboats belonging to the group of young men which included Kenneth Hoddinott. As well as portraits of the boats, other images show teams of sailbats competing in races at Parameta. Many of the crews are photographed close to, in the act of sailing the boats. Group holidays taken over the Christmas breaks for 1945/46, and 1946/47 are recorded. The first shows the group with a line up of five cars on a country roadside. The journey took them to Taranaki, Wairakei, and Wakarewarewa. Along the way one of the cars left the road and ended up down a bank, half hidden in bush. The second trip was to Northland via the East Coast. They visited the Karipiro hydro project and Lake Waikaremoana on the way. The sequence shows camps, tents, people taking meals in the open, a puctured car tyre being changed, and a trip on a mail launch. Other groups of photographs show people at a 21st birthday party, and two group portraits of a motorcycle club, and, later, the members in action on their machines. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Iris Coburn's album

Description: The album begins with the wedding of Iris Payne to Harry Coburn at an unidentified Wellington church in about 1948. There are a few photographs of the reception which include the bride, the groom, the cake, guests, and the bride's mother and father. One group of three photographs are of the bride with her mother, Florence Edith Payne. The next group of photographs relate to holidays taken by Iris and Harry Coburn from the late 1940s to about the mid 1950s. In the earlier part of the sequence they owned a late 1930s Austin car. Later this was replaced by a Standard 8 or Standard 10 dating from about 1954. The holidays covered many of the standard new Zealand tourist destinations in the north and south islands and Stewart Island. Many of the photographs show Iris and Harry with friends and family, sometimes picnicing on holiday, or visiting en route. Babies and other children often feature in these groups. A group of colour prints date from 1962, 1964, and 1966. There are some scenic views, but most show groups of people. One shows Iris with a hugh red gladiolus bloom. Three photographs at the end of the album show Iris, Harry, and Florence in a group of people looking over the damaged ship `Wanganella' in the floating dock in Wellington, probably in 1947. Loose prints have the same range of subjects as most of the rest of the album. Among them is one colour print dated 1971 showing Iris standing at a gate decorated with a variety of wheels.
