Description: Looking across a railway track towards a hill dotted with houses. A factory with a smoking chimney is on the left, across the track. There are rail trucks on a more distant track, and men working alongside the railway line. The factory has been identified as the 'Dehy' factory, probably set up by the Americans during World War II, to dehydrate vegetables. It burned down after the war. Believed on acquisition to the Library to show Pukehou, central Hawkes Bay and to date to ca 1900. However a letter dated 27 March 2013 from the artist's grandson clarified its location as Pukekohe Hill, Franklin District, where the artist lived, and the factory as one established by the Americans in World War II. Description: Shows a group of three men seated on a plank reading the news bulletin during a break in their recovery work. In the right foreground two hot billies are slung on a stick. In the left background is a wrecked car, and further off the background scene is of devastated buildings. Title from accompanying slip of paper. Description: Shows a one-storey cottage with three windows and a door along the front. There is a path leading to the door, and flower beds on either side of the door. The house was Hadfield's first home, built 1849, and located 100 yards north of Rangiatea Church, under the hill. Copy of an earlier sketch 'Rev. Octavius Hadfield's cottage at Otaki, 1849', drawn for F.C. Hadfield by H.S. Hadfield from his father's description, not directly. (A reproduction in Mulgan, A.E. The city of the Strait. Wellington, 1939, attributes the earlier version to Anne Hadfield, but calls it a copy) The earlier sketch is privately owned and was also reproduced in Lethbridge, Chris. Description: Drawing shows John Guard (1831-1918) as a baby, being snatched from the arms of a Maori man by a European soldier, while a second soldier points a pistol at the Maori man. Three further soldiers are on top of a hill to the right, firing at a party of Maori moving along a coastal path. The Marlborough Sounds are in the background and a ship is standing out to sea. This drawing is based on the original oil painting by C Watson, now held at Te Papa Tongarewa. Extended Title - Copy from a painting by C Watson, painted in 1895.
