Description: Shows a sketch of three figures taking a canoe up over boulders in rapids at a narrow part of the river, between bushcovered cliff banks. One man is seated at the far end of the canoe, the middle one is lifting the canoe, and the closest man holds a taut rope attached to it. Description: Shows a view of the passengers and polesmen in a canoe. The men with the poles are labelled Jowett and Deighton. Closer to the front are "The ghoul" (Rora, the wife of the canoe's captain Ewehi) and "Lady and dog". The "lady" is wearing a feather cloak and a hat, and beyond her are seen the backs of two men wearing jackets and hats. Extract from Crawford's "Recollections of travel in New Zealand and Australia ...", London, Trubner, 1880, page 178: "The name of our canoe was "Taraiwahine", of the captain, Ewehi; of his lady, Rora; of an old man with one eye, Aperahama, and Ewi's father, Peata". Description: Shows a sketch of two canoes on a river winding between low cliff banks. There is a fenced rectangular area on the bank at the left and trees beyond. The leading canoe, further away, contains two figures with paddles or poles, and the nearer canoe, following it, has three figures with poles or paddles and two other seated figures with brimmed hats. Description: A card showing images from Opotiki in memory of Carl Sylvius Volker. Comprises: `Rev Volkner's house', `Rev Volkner's church', Memorial gravestone of Rev Volkner, `The Gallows Tree', 'Stern-post of war canoe', Baler, 'Head-gear of war canoe', and photograph of Opotiki Inscriptions: Recto - Memories of a martyr Carl Sylvius Volkner born in Kassel, Germany, trained as a missionary and was one of several missionaries sent to New Zealand by the North German Missionary Society. He arrived in New Zealand August 1849 and initially worked in Taranaki with fellow German Protestant missionaries before offering his services to the Church Missionary Society (1852). He took charge of the CMS mision station at Opotiki (August 1861). Despite hostilities and ignoring warnings he remained at Opotiki until 1865, when he was taken prisoner , charged with being a spy and was taken to a willow tree and hanged. Description: Album of photographs taken by Thomas Andrew during a Pacific voyage on Henderson and Macfarlane schooner "Buster", leaving Auckland 19 September 1886, and calling at Niue, Manihiki, Suwarrow, Starbuck Island (where they rescued the crew of the Swedish barque Diana), Christmas Island, Swains Island (now part of American Samoa), Nauru, Tokelau, Gilbert, Ellice, Marshall and Caroline groups. They returned to Auckland in April 1887.
