Description: Te Awa-i-taia was a leader of Ngati Mahanga, whose home was on the Waipa River. In 1833 he was converted to Christianity and baptised by the resident Wesleyan Missionary, James Wallis on 17 January 1836. He signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 11 April 1840 when it was brought to Whaingaroa by the CMS missionary Robert Maunsell and he exhorted others to do likewise. Description: Shows, from left to right: Hine Paketia, Puhara, Alice Kranama, Te Uri He Kahekakariki, Hine Rangia, and Patuware. The group were all members of the Ngati Kahungugnu tribe. The women on the left was Queen Hineipatekia, sister of Te Hapuku. She was mentioned as "our Queen" in Te Hapuku's 1851 letter to Governor Grey disputing the price offered by the Crown for the land. His "favourite wife of 13 wives, Hine Rangia" is second from the right and his daughter is on the far right. Te Hapuku (Te Ika Nui o te Moana, paramount chief of the Ahuriri/Napier area) was responsible for selling the tribe's land to the Crown. This led to intertribal warfare for many years. Figures drawn on separate sheets and pasted on to background. Descriptive note signed: R. Park. Some Maori names spelt incorrectly. Note on back. A very similar watercolour is in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. It is titled Natives of Ahuriri (Hawkes Bay) alive in 1851 and is signed by Robert Park Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title and names and roles of the subjects, in ink. The notes were added later than the drawing was made, since they include death dates after 1851 for a number of the subjects Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows a view across the harbour towards the town buildings, with Plimmer's Ark noticeable on the foreshore, and the buildings of barracks on the more distant hill at the left. In the right foreground is a small jetty with a wooden hut or sentry box on the end of it, and wooden steps leading down to a moored rowing boat. In the left foreground a red canoe with a cargo possibly of fish or firewood is poled along by a seated tag-cloaked pipe-smoking figure, and a figure standing in a red cloak. The reflections of the canoe and the jetty and hut are clearly visible in the water in the foreground. Further away at the left are a yacht and a larger sailing ship seen end on. Attribution: Attributed to Gold on stylistic grounds, such as the reflections of the canoe and the awkwardness of the figures; see work by Gold at A-288-026. Another version of this watercolour, closely similar, is in Whanganui Museum, signed 'Dr Phillips pinxt'. The name Dr Phillips is not known as an artist resident in Wellington in the 1850s. One artist may have copied the other's work. William Edward Phillips registered as a medical practitioner in Nelson in 1867, but is not known to have been an artist Dating: Gold was based in Wellington between 1847 and 1858. 'Plimmer's Ark', the wrecked barque Inconstant, was moored at the junction of Lambton Quay and Willis Street from 1851 The sentry-box on the end of the wharf was located close to Government House, now the site of Parliament buildings, towards the north end of Lambton Quay Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
