Description: Comprise Meade's journals on the Esk and Curacao, botanical, biological, meteorological and and scientific observations, sandal wood, and the journal of a tour from Auckland to Taranaki 1849-1850 by Governor Grey Source of title - Transcribed Brenchley first visited the Pacific in 1850 with the French traveller, Jules Remy, during his American tour. He later visited New Zealand in 1864 with Lt Herbert Meade RN, and involved himself in Maori affairs. From Sydney he visited Pacific islands in the Curacoa in 1865 and the Esk in 1866. Description: Diagrammatic map drawn on higher ground overlooking the scene where the HMS Buffalo navy ship was wrecked ('28th July 1840, at 10 am'). Map shows the site was wrecked, in a flat, sandy beach area, the thickly wooded hills behind it, the encampment of those who were in the wrecked ship, points on the beach where parts of the ship were washed ashore, and an area of flat marshy ground. Also depicted is the neighbouring pa site (maori village) of the Chief Teraroa, ('Teraroa's hippah'), the encampment of the part of the Buffalo's crew 'who were employed in the firest, preparing the cargo, Mercury River, part of Wiritianga's pa site, as well as Mr Brown's wharf-store and settlement ('Buffalo's store's were landed there'). Signature of creator on map but hard to distinguish. Appears to be ?T. Laslett. Shows several drawings of trees, buildings at Brown's settlement, navy tents. Description: Contains official copies of correspondence relating to land claims from Te Tai Tokerau and Pewhairangi (i.e. Bay of Islands, the word is a transliteration), Waikato and Whanganui. Includes various documents relating to Whanganui giving extensive lists of names for the purchase of guns, powder and flint by Whanganui Maori; lists of Whanganui Maori working for the Regional Magistrate and their salaries; census of friendly natives, Whanganui district. The last document is the original of the deed by which Nopera Parakareao and other Te Rarawa chiefs sold the Muriwhenua lands of Te Aupouri to the Rev Richard Taylor, witnessed by William Gilbert Puckey, 20 January 1840. A translation of this in Taylor's hand is in MS-Papers-0075-106E. Written only two weeks before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi to secure private property rights for Taylor (before the arrival of Hobson and the signing of the Treaty) but the publication of Gipps's proclamations of 14 January 1840 invalidated the sale. Description: These papers span folders 079 to 081. A note dated Apr 1918 in S P Smith's hand describes the contents as "Original papers supplied to the Govt paper `Karere Maori' in the fifties of last century - mostly in the writing of H A H Monro, native interpreter, Thos H Smith Asst Under Sec Native Dept, and others". The papers include both Maori and English versions of papers for publication. This volume contains drafts of articles, notices and advertisements dealing with market information, opinions about land transactions, the boundaries of various land blocks, Biblical texts and proclamations from the Governor; there is also a letter from Hawkes Bay Maori about the conflict between Te Hapuku and Te Moananui, promising that Pakeha will not be interfered with, and an account of the British colonisation of India and concerns about the effects on the Hindu and Muslim religions. Arrangement: According to Smith's note these papers also originally included letters to Donald McLean from Henry and William Halse and from John Rogan.
