Artist unknown :Otea or Great Barrier Island, New Zealand. [9 or 10 Dec. 1847 or 1843]....

Date: 1847 - 1841 - 1843

By: Bambridge, William, 1819-1879; Scammell, Edward DuBoistel, active 1930s

Reference: A-090-017

Description: Captain Nagle's house on the right, in the middle distance, with other buildings to the left and huts and tents in the foreground. A flag on a hill in the middle distance, a small canoe landing on the shore to the right and a longer Maori war canoe in the water. Compare A-090-018. This view (A-090-017) shows the house in more detail, but lacks the large ship being built as shown in A-090-018. The similarity of the two views appears to be the reason that Chief Librarian Johannes Andersen attributed the work to Bambridge. However the style is not that of Bambridge The drawing is on a page that has been removed from a bound volume, with rust marks down the remains of the gutter. Other Titles - Bambridge, William Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title in pencil in Bambridge's hand. In addition there are pencil inscriptions above and below the image in the hand of the Alexander Turnbull Library's Chief Librarian, Johannes Andersen, suggesting the work is by William Bambridge, providing extra information about Nagle, the date of Bambridge's visit and the name of the donor of the work to the Library. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil and watercolour on paper, 238 x 205 mm

Smith, William Mein 1799-1869 :Mount Victoria and Lambton Harbour from the Tinakore [18...

Date: 1840 - 1841

By: Smith, William Mein, 1799-1869; Turnbull, Alexander Horsburgh, 1868-1918

Reference: C-011-006

Description: View from Tinakori Hill, looking down over Thorndon, showing the Immigration Barracks, the first St Paul's Church and a single house on the shore at Oriental Bay. The view looks across the harbour towards Mount Victoria and Evans Bay. There are several dead trees on Thorndon Flat. Point Jerningham is on the left across the water, and there are six ships and several smaller vessels in the harbour. Two flags are flying close to the shore The Hocken Library holds a lithograph (possibly a unique surviving copy) of this view, published by Jones & Bluett, Wellington, 1841. The view is taken at much the same time as Heaphy's 'Thorndon Flat, April 1841' (C-025-010) Features marked along the top, but trimmed, so that they are all incomplete: 'n Houses' is probably Immigration Houses'; 'a Esq.r' is probably Duppa Esquire [house in Oriental Bay]; 'Church' is probably St Paul's Church; 'ia' is the end of Mt Victoria; 'Bay' on the left, is Evans Bay. Dating: the associated lithograph was published in 1843. St Paul's Church, Museum Street, was consecrated in 1844, but possibly completed some time before 1844. Other Titles - Tinakori Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pen and brown ink drawing 206 x 307 mm Provenance: Collection of Alexander Turnbull, purchased 1915, from Francis Edwards. Formerly New Zealand Company collection

Norman, Edmund, 1820-1875 :[Wairarapa (or Waikato) settlement? Kaiapoi Pa, Canterbury? ...

Date: 1842 - 1850 - 1845 - 1860

By: Norman, Edmund, 1820-1875

Reference: A-113-003

Description: Three Maori seated in the foreground at the edge of a curved river bank with the palisades and a whare or part of a pa to the right. Cabbage trees, flax and manuka trees and other taller trees on a plain. In the middle ground is a European house and outbuildings surrounded by a fence, at the foot of a prominent hill, with other hills in the background to the left. The scene bears a strong resemblance to a view of Kaiapoi, early 1850s, a watercolour in the Canterbury Museum by Charles Haubro. However, the hills in the background make a location further inland in Canterbury more likely. Norman was in the Wellington Region from 1842 to 1845. He is not known to have visited the Waikato area, a location suggested by the Auckland seller of the drawing. He is known to have visited as far north as Auckland itself. In the 1850s until his death in 1872 he was based in the South Island, in Canterbury and South Canterbury, and his undated drawing of Nelson is also in the Library's collection. One possible location for this view is Rangitumau, with the prominent hill being Mount Rangitumau (north of Masterton in the Wairarapa) and the river being either the Whangaehu or the Kopuaranga. If the scene is a Wairarapa one, it is likely to date from between 1842 to 1845. Other Titles - Rangitumau, Wairarapa? Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Ed Norman Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil, sepia and blue pen and ink 196 x 248 mm

Fenced paddocks to the right and three small people walking away on the road to the left. Several dead trees in the foreground. Compare a very similar work by Cyprian Bridge at A-079-035 The work appears to have been part of a sketchbook at an earlier stage, with signs of having been bound on its left side.
