Description: Comprises correspondence between Thomas King and Mary Chilman (later King), and between King and various family members and friends; King's business correspondence, especially relating to coastal shipping; papers relating to King's election to the House of Representatives (1853-1855, 1860) and to the Taranaki Provincial Council (1856, 1857-1861); a few relating to his career as manager of the Bank of New Zealand in New Plymouth (1861-1876); and a considerable amount relating to his position as chairman of the New Plymouth Harbour Board (1876-ca1889). Te Kahui Wiremu Kararehe - Life of Wiremu Kingi Matakatea and other notes

Description: Includes a preface and translation in S P Smith's hand with a note: `A large part of this has been embodied in "Hist. and Trad. of Taranaki Coast"'. There is also a covering note signed by W H S (W H Skinner) on the provenance of the ms with a genealogy of Teira Whatakore attached. Also includes letter from T M Hocken to Smith, Dunedin 1 Jun 1893, forwarding books and precis of copies or extracts of Colonial Office material, Sep 1835, on the `Alligator' and J Guard affair. The manuscript gives a biographical account of Wiremu Kingi Matakatea, with whakapapa, with much information about his role in conflicts between Taranaki and other iwi, and between Taranaki and the Government in the first Taranaki campaign (1860) in the New Zealand wars; the document also discusses the shipwreck `Harriet' and the treatment received by the survivors; there are also translations of the material. Description: Drafts of biography `Ernst Dieffenbach: rebel and humanist'. Also correspondence with research institutes and publishers and copies of correspondence and other writings by Dieffebach. Ernest Dieffenbach (1811-1855), in NZ from 1839-1840, was engaged by the New Zealand Company as a surgeon and naturalist. He explored around Waikato and Taupo, visited the Chatham Islands and was the first man to climb Mt Egmont. Description: William and Agnes Syme came from Dollar in Clackmannan, Scotland in 1875 with seven of their three children in the Forfarshire. Farmed first at Egmont Village and later at Onaero, Taranaki. William helped to build the breakwater at New Plymouth. Most of the family took up farming. Syme's Beach at Onaero is named after them. Description: Chiefly family letters from William Bolland, first minister at New Plymouth, 1843-1847; and from his wife Jane, after his death. Also two letters from Bishop Selwyn, and one from John Morgan, Wanganui to Rev W E Bolland, Norfolk, England, dated 1910 Included are three letters by William Bolland to his mother Sarah Bolland. In two of them William describes his happiness at having married Jane Wright. They were married in 1841, and sailed for Taranaki the same year. In three letters written by Jane from New Zealand she describes their arrival, life as a clergyman's wife, her home, and nursing her son through an illness. Description: A small mortar or cannon on a wheeled carriage, standing on a wooden platform, possibly seen by the artist on a visit to New Plymouth in 1879. There is a rough indication of trees beyond the cannon The text may be a transcription of text in Maori and English below the cannon depicted. There appear to be words written on a plaque beneath the mouth of the cannon. The cannon, known as Dicky Barrett, was first located in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, from 1875. Description: Shows a canoe with sails on the water, and a pa (likely to be Haera Hau Pa) perched on a cliff promontory overlooking the river. There are canoes drawn up on the narrow beach under the cliff and low scrub and a path rising up the cliff face. The view is from the right bank looking southeast across the river mouth and inland, with the pa on the cliff above the left bank Heaphy visited Patea Pa (and Waimate Pa), Taranaki, in 1839 on a journey with Robert Park. Description: A view from the sea, showing a three-masted barque, possibly intended to represent the Tory, in the left foreground. The Sugar Loaf Islands and volcanic peak Paritutu in right foreground. Mount Egmont and foothills in the background. Mount Egmont or Taranaki is represented rather more accurately in this view, than in Heaphy's Mount Egmont from the Southward, where its cone is depicted with too great a perfection. Possibly an imaginative reconstruction by the artist of his voyage aboard the Tory past Mt Taranaki in 1839 or 1840. Other Titles - Taranaki Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - C.
