Description: Album of photographs, mostly relating to New Zealanders in the South African War, but also including many which show the D Battery, 1st New Zealand Mounted Rifles at various military camps in the Wellington region. Many show groups of soldiers, with surnames noted. One view shows the Opening of Parliament in 1898, with a parade of D Battery; and a few show the opening of the Star Boating Club in Wellington. Some images taken by unidentified photographers, some probably taken by Thomas Watson Brown. The earliest image was taken in 1878, and shows a home in Masterton; another image shows a work picnic with a group in a tug-of-war at Day's Bay, in 1912; a group portrait of staff in the Mines Department taken in Wellington, 1907; and a group portrait of the 10th anniversary reunion of the 1st New Zealand Contingent, held in Wellington, 21.10.1909, taken by Zak Studios, No. 7275. Description: Comprises black and white prints relating to Sidney James Anton and the Anton family. Several images feature Sidney James Anton. Contains formal studio portraits and informal photographs of family and friends in garden settings. Taken by a range of photographers, some unknown, circa 1915 to 1924. Many photographs are inscribed in pencil with names. One group of prints relate to the football (soccer) and rugby activities of Sidney James Anton and his football teams. Prints mounted on card show Thorndon Football Club Junior Eleven 1921 and an unknown rugby team with ball marked 'Duthie 1924' (also features Bill Nimmo). Several smaller prints show the Brooklyn soccer club players posing in team jerseys on the field and in suits, one man has a kewpie doll mascot on his lapel. Some prints show the team on away trips, in front of a motorbus and in front of a memorial and gazebo in botanical gardens. Two prints relate to the employment and social activities of Sidney James Anton. A print mounted on card shows his employer Ellis Harper, Wellington Plumbing Supplies Limited. Another print shows Anton in a group photograph of men (possibly RSA). Several photographs are taken of Sidney James Anton and family or friends wearing fancy dress costumes at the Brooklyn Carnival prior to World War One. The remainder of the prints show the friends and family members related to the Anton family. Some prints are inscribed, Mary Anton, Billy Anton, Sybil Edith Anton (nee Nimmo), Ngaire Biggs, Barbara, Thelma, Alice Biggs (nee Anton), Max Biggs, Bert Ward, Bill Ward, Girlie Maslin. Description: Photographs of members of the Brooklyn Scout Group between 1909 and 1934, on various camps and trips, including group portraits, and portraits of individual scoutmasters during the period. One image taken in 1910 shows combined scout groups at the Boys' Institute fete held in the Wellington Botanical Gardens in 1910, and was photographed by Zak Studio. The album includes a newspaper cutting announcing the death of Flying Officer Horace Callow who was killed in action in 1944. Description: Three coloured postcards, one of a old Maori woman dozing outside a house (identified as Ceylon Wickliffe's Great Aunt), a Maori girl described as the Arawa Belle (identified as Marie McFarland), and some Maori children playing in the lake at Ohinemutu; the seven men of the executive of the New Zealand Harbour Boards Conference seated outside a building; three photographs of a Maori event in a park, probably in Wellington, with tents pitched and participants wearing kakahu over European dress; two women in traditional dress next to a wood carving, one is holding a hoe; a hut at Hawk's Crag on the Buller River; a loaded cart passing through Porter's Pass; Wellington wharves seen from Oriental Parade; the Buller River; a group of men gathered round a table to sign a document; view from Mount Cook towards Mount Victoria with what are possibly brickworks in the foreground; and photographs of four petitions submitted in Greymouth.
