Description: Sketch on the right shows a view across a plain with small round ponds from a camp fire beneath overhanging rocks, 'Commissioner's Cave, Ototara. The sketch on the left shows a man with a broad-brimmed hat, and patched trousers, leaning against the walls of a small wooden shelter, with a table and cooking pots on the ground beside him. It appears to be a copy of F. E. Nairn's 'Rakitawine of Te Hakataramea, Waitaki' (original sketch located at C-103-080-1) The view from the rock shelter identified as 'Commissioner's Cave' Ototara from Alfred Wills' drawing 'View from Commissioner's Cave, Ototara, looking southwest. Three of the curious round ponds on the plain. [Oct/Nov, 1848]. The Commissioner was likely to be Mantell, Commissioner for the Extinguishment of Native Titles Inscriptions: Recto - top right - 'Copied' [possibly from drawings by Alfred Wills and Francis Nairn] Quantity: 2 drawing(s) (on one page). Description: 6 drawings on one page, showing from top left, two views of storage platforms titled Te Owiwa or Te Owina, and 'forries and futters' [whares and whatas]. The 3rd view is of a pa alongside a river, with a whare and a storage platform, the 4th of a large egg, possibly a moa's egg. The 5th is titled W te R. Remains of pa f... Hap 1851 and another illegible word. It shows several carved niu poles, and a cabbage tree, with a plain and hills beyond and an unidentified object in front on the ground. The 6th is titled Ruataniwha and dated Sept 7, and is signed A. W. (Alfred Wills). It shows a pa alongside a river, possibly the same site as no. 3, with a stand of bush behind it, at Ruataniwha (a name no longer in current use) Ruataniwha was the name of the pa on the site that eventually became Twizel, South Canterbury Quantity: 6 drawing(s).
