Description: Shows one cloaked figure standing, with others seated around him, in an area in front of several huts. There is a raised platform just behind the standing figure. ATL copy at p 919.31 1835 (More copies in Reserve and Wrapped Reserve) Rev Henry Williams writes in his journal about drawing this scene and is likely to be the original artist, with the engraving created by English engraver Samuel Williams Other Titles - After a drawing by Henry Williams Extended Title - from William Yate's "An account of New Zealand ..." Description: Shows the foreshore at Paihia with three canoes at the water's edge, and the houses, huts and gardens of the Church Missionary Society station back from the beach. A flag, probably the Union Jack, is flying from one of the hills behind the houses. Published as a wood engraving in the Church Missionary quarterly papers, no. 79, Michaelmas, 1835, frontispiece, with title Mission station, Paihia, New Zealand.. Inscriptions: On former paper and linen backing, removed and stored with the drawing: In ink, top centre visible through linen 'Paihia'. On linen, in another hand, in pencil 'Henry'. Description: Shows Henry Wiliams, John Morgan, Alfred Nesbit Brown and Dr William Fairburn, struggling through a flax or raupo edged swamp, assisted by Maori. According to the associated text, 'The scene took place in a journey of hte missionaries to Matamata ... The European to the left is intended for the Rev. Henry Williams; the one on the right for Mr Morgan, who, having slipped into a hole, is being helped out by the native; the two in teh centre for the Rev. A. N. Brown and Dr Fairburn. Description: A group of war canoes racing, some with sails. In the centre of the group is the missionary schooner, Karere, flying a red and blue ensign. A headland is in the background. Reprinted in the Quarterly papers of the Church Missionary Society in 1849. The image was also used to illustrate Rev. William Yate's 'An account of New Zealand' (London, 1835) opp. p. 184, with title The mission boat accompanying a New Zealand war expedition. Engraved by S. Williams.
