Description: Shows missionary settlement at Rangihoua, Bay of Islands. After an almost identical image (which however has 2 larger sailing ships in the foreground) "Church missionary settlement at Rangihoua, N.Z.", published in Church Missionary Quarterly Papers, midsummer 1832, no. 66, cover page; and, "[Missionary settlement at Rangihoua on the North side of the Bay of Islands c.1830]", an oil painting in the Rex Nan Kivell collection. This latter also features two vessels in foreground sea. The Library also holds Wanganui and pier [?] from cave, New Zealand [185-?], published by W E & F Newton (Curios-021-007), showing the scene in a similar way, by an unknown artist. Description: A group of war canoes racing, some with sails. In the centre of the group is the missionary schooner, Karere, flying a red and blue ensign. A headland is in the background. Reprinted in the Quarterly papers of the Church Missionary Society in 1849. The image was also used to illustrate Rev. William Yate's 'An account of New Zealand' (London, 1835) opp. p. 184, with title The mission boat accompanying a New Zealand war expedition. Engraved by S. Williams. Description: Shows a scene near Hauraki, 9 April 1851, with Archdeacon Brown and members of the Tauranga tribes, including an orator (probably Wiremu Tamihana Tarapipipi Te Waharoa) in the centre, who gestures with an upraised arm and a spear in his other hand. On the other side of the stream that runs between the two groups of men is another Church Missionary Society missionary, who negotiates for local tribes, whose members stand around him. Some of the Maoris' clothing is coloured pink, or pink and white-striped.
