Description: Sketches depicting incidents arising out of a taua or raiding party visiting Parawera settlement to exact revenge after a case of adultery. The marae, various groupings of iwi, dances, fights, haka, horseriding, and competitions are depicted, along with a visit from the police. The Parawera group were Ngati Apakura, Te Wherowhero's iwi, and the visitors in search of payment were Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Hourua and Ngati Koroki. Ngati Haua are also mentioned in one sketch. Description: Shows the Maori guide Kehu snaring a weka with a lure of food on a stick and a long pole with a noose. To the right is a makeshift open-fronted slab hut, a small fire burning outside, with the artist's two European companions, Charles Heaphy and Thomas Brunner reclining inside. The Matakitaki River and hills are in the background. Mount Mantell is the cone-shaped hill to the right. Recorded by Fox on his 1846 journey from Nelson through to the West Coast and back with Charles Heaphy and Thomas Brunner. Description: Shows canoes, storehouse and carved objects. Hongi is seated in a central position, with huia feathers in his hair. Earle, seated on the left, is gesturing and is wearing a green cap. Another European is seated behind Earle, his friend Shand. Hongi's family and supporters surround him and the group is seated at the base of a low cliff. The meeting took place in a bay about 1 mile from Kororareka (Russell). Hongi had fought without his armour, supplied by King George IV, and had been wounded by a ball in the chest. He was to die the following year. Identification: the exact identity of Mr Shand is not known. Earle described him as a Scotsman. Description: A very large wooden construction (hakari) with flags flying from poles on the top. There are people climbing up its sides, seated beneath it and moving round its base. Piles of food are also on the ground The hakari was erected at Kororareka (modern Russell) Bay of Islands to contain the food at a feast given by the local chiefs in honour of Sir George Grey Compare with a watercolour version at B-030-007 and E-144-002 (British Museum version), both by Cuthbert Clarke, as well as another very similar version in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. Description: View from inside Pipitea Pa, looking north up the harbour towards the Hutt Valley and the Rimutaka Ranges. In the left foreground, two people sit, wrapped in blankets on bare ground. The edges of the site are defined with palisades of varying heights. On lower ground to the right are a wharenui, a long low building with a single door in the side, and two whata or food storage buildings on poles. Note on verso: Selected to be exhibited in the Academy Gallery for the Chamber of Commerce centennial June 1956, but not shown because of lack of space. Description: Shows the ornately carved frontage of a storehouse on two poles, with a notched climbing pole for access. In the left background sit a Maori man and women with a cooking pot and a dog in front of a large whare. There is a wooden enclosure fence with carved posts at the right and behind, including one human figurehead, a pipe in his mouth. There are woven bags of food possibly kumara stacked beneath the storehouse. Mount Egmont, its height and symmetry exaggerated, is in the background Lithograph, entitled "Wata or Provision house at Otumatua" (neg. 1/2-150220-F), was made by an unknown lithographer, after this watercolour, and included as an illustration in Wakefield, E. J. Illustrations to Adventure in New Zealand (London, 1845). A watercolour by Heaphy in the Hocken Library, Dunedin, is titled by the artist 'Gateway at Otumatia Pa'. Description: Shows two figures on the near ridge, looking down over the inlet of Picton Harbour at left. To the right are hills, and in the distance can be seen islands and hills in the Marlborough Sounds. There is a small area of cleared land with a Maori kainga or pa (Waitohi Pa?) in the port area to the left, and slightly to the right, a building that appears to be a European church. The New Zealand Company stamp, dated 1848, appears in the sky area along with the number 268. Painted for the New Zealand Company during Fox's travels around the northern South Island in 1848. Description: Shows a plain, either in the Waimea area, or more probably in the Motueka Valley, with the Motueka River passing through it. There are felled trees in the foreground, and a Maori food storage storage platform with two levels and curved rat-barriers on its legs. It holds flax kits of food. Description: The Rev Thomas Chapman officiating right of centre, bald-headed and wearing spectacles, with a crowd of English and Maori spectators, around the reclining aged chief Te Ngahue, who was baptised on his deathbed. Te Ariki was on Tarawera Lake. Sir George Grey is probably the standing figure in profile at Te Ngahue's feet while the smaller dark man standing behind him with handlebar moustache and side whiskers is likely to be Grey's secretary, John Jermyn Symonds An accompanying MS note by A H Turnbull attributes this sketch to Sir George Grey, but B30/8, a tinted wood engraving after this sketch, says that "Sir George Grey... was so much impressed by the scene that he had a drawing of it made".. Turnbull's attribution has obviously been taken from the Church Missionary Gleaner, 1884, p. 18 which says that Grey "made a sketch of on the spot.", The sketch was initially reproduced as a wood engraving in the Church Missionary Intelligencer, March 1851, opp. p. 70, with descriptive text of the event on p. 71. See: Journal of an expedition overland from Auckland to Taranaki ...[by George Sisson Cooper] p. 222-226 for a description of this event. Inscriptions: Verso - title in pencil in the hand of Alexander Turnbull, with an attribution to Sir George Grey. A note in another hand suggests that the artist is Cuthbert Clarke. Description: Comprises one scrapbook compiled by Alexander Turnbull between circa 1878 and 1896, possibly not completed. Material collected by Turnbull dates from 1846 to 1897 and largely relates to te ao Māori, some is written in reo Māori with English translations. Letters, notes, envelopes and also bank cheques have been pasted into the volume, some also attached by pins. Includes: - various letters and waiata transcribed by G H Davies. - Māori to English word lists as well as whakatauki, waiata and karakia, some with English interpretations. - whakapapa relating to Ngāpuhi (p001 and p009) and Te Arawa hapū (p068) - manuscript titled 'Ko nga whakapapa o Nga Tupuna on Nga Ture of Niu Tireni' and translation 'The Genealogy of the Ancestors of the Law of New Zealand' (p003). - information and illustrations recorded by Timi Waata Rimini, about the Maketū-Ōpōtiki area, in particular the pā at Pukuhina, Oreiwhata and Poutuia (p016). - letter from a Mr Walsh dated 1896 to Mr Smith with a large splinter of wood attached. Description: An enormous open hakari, or wooden construction, with flags flying from poles on the top and people climbing up its sides, seated beneath it, and moving around its base. A long low whare is in the foreground, with another at right angles to it, and piles of food are on the ground with the whole enclosed by a low fence. This watercolour was originally in the Bridge/Williams album (E-320-f). Description: John Bryce in military uniform, sawing through the leg of a recumbent Maori man. The leg is marked 'flour' and the other leg, marked 'Sugar' has already been removed. A chopping block with axe and chisel are in the foreground, a palm tree to the right. In the background is an exaggerated version of Mount Taranaki, with four military tents in a field and three men ploughing the ground beyond a fence on the right. The cartoon is a reference to the Government's treatment of the Maori passive resisters at Parihaka. Bryce was Minister of Native Affairs and of Defence in 1881 The cartoonist's initials match those of two artists one being Edward Payton; however his monogram was different and the drawing of the figures is quite amateur, so Payton is unlikely to be the artist. The other possibility is Edward Pharazyn. The style of monogram appears to be his, and he commonly signed his work with his initials The stick figures across the fence to the right probably represent the 'ploughmen of Parihaka' who continued to plough their fields in defiance of a Government ban on the activity.
