Description: Shows views of Maori buildings in Papawai and Te Ore Ore (Masterton area), the homesteads of A. Hutt and A. Hawdon at Underwood (possibly Port Underwood), Picton, Wanganui, Canterbury Plains (including Mt Peel, Rangitata), Feilding (including Lord Ranfurly's arrival there), Wairarapa, Levin (a Maori house), W. Maunsel's house in Masterton, the home of H. Nixon at Sedgebrook, and the Church Mission house at Waimate (Bay of Islands). This last is by Richard Taylor (Mary Medley's father), as is a view of St Sampson Church, Guernsey. At the back are loose sketches with copies of Edward Lear's illustrated limericks. Description: Shows view of Wanganui wharf, Christ Church, and Rutland Stockade, framed by cave entrance, with three Maori figures in foreground. Loosely based on Richard Taylor's "Wanganui, NZ" (1848), at E-296-q-159, combined with the wood engraving in the Church Missionary Gleaner (1884, p. 83, a re-illustration of an 1850s view] 'The mission station at Wanganui, as seen from a natural cave in the rocks'. Dating: W E & F Newton were based at 3 Fleet Street (the address printed on the wooden surround) between 1852 and 1857 A likeness of this scene is at Curios-042-013, Wanganui and cave New Zealand, by the same publishers Inscriptions: Verso - (Embossed on frame at left and right of image): W.E. & F. Description: Contains reports written to London by Octavius Hadfield dated Otaki 1856 and 1857, notes written by Hadfield, on a meeting held at Otaki 12 June 1858 and reports written by Richard Taylor dated Wanganui 1856, Wanganui 1857 and Otaki 22 March 1858. Also contains copies, in Richard Taylor's hand of two letters written to Taylor by James Booth both dated 24 Dec 1864 and a letter from Taylor to Booth dated 14 Jan 1865.
