Description: Several young men working on the trunk of a large tree, while others hold firebrands and fire rages in the bush beyond. A flock of birds are in the sky, top left Very similar to 'Burning the bush, Taranaki, 1856' a watercolour at E-453-f-008. 'Bush burning' has a similar trunk fallen across the centre and a man with a firebrand, with the fire just behind the people and the large trunk. The arrangement of the figures and of some surrounding trees and plants is different in 'Burning the bush' and a stronger atmosphere of fear of the fire is present in the latter. Description: Looking south along the beach towards Paritutu rock with the prow of a small ship visible behind a sandhill at the water's edge. The palisades of Paritutu Pa are on the left. The ship's rigging is covered with flags. A crowd on foot, horseback and in carriages and carts surround the ship. Strutt had left Taranaki for Australia in 1856. He may have drawn this view partly from imagination. The Taranaki was launched in 1860. His drawing 'Mototua and land, Sugar Loaf, Near New Plymouth, 1856 (reference number E-453-f-007) is a similar view, lacking the ship Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: From the site of modern New Plymouth, looking past the mouth of the Huatoki Stream south along the beach line towards the Sugarloaf Islands and Paritutu. In the foreground is a group of Maori with a bullock dray being urged along, a man with a pig leg-roped and several other groups, including two men who appear to be performing a haka. Further along the beach, a boat is landing, close to several canoes, there are one or two European houses and a large flagpole for signalling. The small stone cottage with pointed gable closest to Paritutu on the left belonged to C. W. Richmond and his wife Emily Elizabeth Richmond. Strutt has used parts of this drawing as the basis for his oil 'On the beach, Onehunga, 1856' The Richmond's stone cottage is still standing, next to New Plymouth Public Library.
