Description: Chiefly photographs of the aftermath of the Tarawera eruption in 1886, many taken by Charles Spencer. Images include Dr Hector's party; views of mud-covered country; damage to buildings at the village of Te Wairoa; Henry Lundius and J C Blythe standing outside the hen-house in which several survivors took refuge; and views of the new lake formed after the eruption. Several views show the area before the eruption. The last two photographs in the album show the Manawatu Gorge bridge under construction, and the engine room at the Government Printing Office in Wellington. Description: Photographs taken during the 1880s, chiefly by George Valentine, and Charles Spencer, both of whom visited Mount Tarawera before and after the eruption of June 1886. Inserted in a pocket at the front of the album are images cut from the paper "Newsview", June 1949, showing historic photographs of the eruption, and another double-page from the Weekly News (June 6, 1951) on the "65th Anniversary of the Mount Tarawera catastrophe". The latter article notes that mud, estimated at 75 ft in depth, covered a vast area. The album includes images taken before the eruption, and shows the same areas irreparable damaged. Many show the Pink and White Terraces, the village of Te Wairoa, and the massive rift in the mountain; also a group led by Sir James Hector to study the aftermath and changes wrought by the eruption. Colombo is shown in the first part of the album, and includes street scenes, the "Old Colombo Lighthouse", the Galle Face Hotel(?), views of outrigger fishing canoes, carts drawn by humped cattle, "padda" boats on a canal, and a group of young Sri Lankan women. The second part of the album contains views of New Zealand, chiefly in the thermal regions with views of Ohinemutu, Hamurana Springs, the Poutuhu Geyser, Waimangu Geyser, the "Fairy bath" at Okoroire and the "Okoroire Natural Bridge Rapids". Description: Album of photographs, all taken by Charles Spencer, in the Rotorua District around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption of June 1886; except the last photograph in the album. This was taken by an unidentified photographer, showing "Waitangi Falls where Treaty with Maoris was signed". The views of Mount Tarawera showed the area before the eruption, including the village of Te Ariki, at the head of Lake Tarawera, the Pink and White Terraces, Lake Tarawera and Rotomahana. Views after the eruption showed the first group to ascend Tarawera. This was Percy Smith's party, of which Charles Spencer was a member. These images show the damage done to the village of Te Wairoa, the Pink and White Terraces, and showed the enormous changes to the landscape, including the rift which developed between Mount Tarawera and Rotomahana.
