Description: Shows a weir across a stream in the foreground and a farmer and his dog driving a flock of sheep on foot, on the plain in the middle distance. Evening light strikes the Southern Alps in the distance. "Our view is taken from the plains lying at the foot of Mount Alford, a few miles from the station of that name, showing a sheep-washing place in the foreground. This high mountain range forms a grand background to this part of the Canterbury Plains stretching from Mount Somers to Mount Hutt, a part of which is seen to the right of the picture, and at the foot of which the River Rakaia flows".
