Description: Coastal profile looking towards Pauanui and the Coromandel west coast. A small sailing ship is closer to the shore Clipped from a journal. Two partially-related passages inscribed in ink on verso, in the hand of John Kinder: 'part of the tackle having broke our captain had put back again in the night. The vessel itself in fact seems to be in no very seaworthy condition. The pump is constantly going and the tackle rotten, and this I have no doubt will in some deegree account for the timidity of the crew, in running in here in the first instance to'[new passage] [mis]sionary now in Auckland) was formerly trained there but has given it up and ... Davies who succeeded him has since been obliged to abandon it on account of ill health. It appears very much as if the missionary clergy were fond of running away from their duties and coming to Auckland. Mr Baker' [passage ends] In December 1857, Kinder set out by coastal vessel for Tauranga, continuing on foot to Rotorua, Rotomahana and the thermal region. Physical Description: Pen and ink and wash, 162 x 280 mm Provenance: Originally part of a scrapbook, purchased 1950s from a second-hand bookshop by Mr Harry Rodewald of Auckland. Broken up in the early 1980s with the drawings sold individually by McArthur & Co, Auckland (1984).
