Description: Photograph taken during the Greymouth flood showing people on Mawhera Quay opposite the Gilmer Hotel. Floodwaters have submerged the adjacent street and water laps at the front of hotels and shops along the quay. An unidentified sailing ship and paddlesteamer are tied up at the wharf. Description: Photograph album of shipping movements and shipwrecks at Greymouth, compiled by an unidentified person. Also contains one image of a wreck at Westport. Photographs taken between circa 1907 and 1933 by mainly unidentified photographers. West Coast photographer James Ring, L A Inkster, and Mascotte Studio are identified. Most of the ships are named. - Album contains images of ships wrecked crossing the Greymouth Bar. Also ship movements with mainly steam ships, but also some sailing vessels and the tug boat 'Westland', arriving in and departing from Greymouth as well as docked at the wharf. Photographs of note include a series of images of the wreck of the SS 'Ngahere' (1924), including rescue effort with rocket firing line to the wreck, crew in lifebelts waiting to be rescued, and two images of the wreck photographed from the air; the crew of the SS 'Perth' abandoning ship in a lifeboat; series of the wreck of the 'Kotuku', including rescue cradle between the boat and the land, the wreck being pounded by heavy seas and breaking up, and, later, the remains being blown up; the SS 'Kaituna' docked at Greymouth Wharf with the Grey River in flood; series of images of the wreck of the SS 'Lauderdale', including Captain Clarke coming ashore in a rescue cradle and the vessel breaking up; series of images of the wreck of the SS 'Kaponga' including shortly after the ship struck the North Tip, with hatches up to dump cargo, being driven against the North Tip, and breaking up; circa 11 ships docked at Greymouth Wharf in 1928; coal being loaded onto the SS 'Ngakuta'; and people inspecting the wreck of the 'Tavanui' at low tide at Westport. Album had been in the possession of Dr Rod McLeod, now deceased. He was the founder of the Queensland Maritime Museum, and a surgeon.

Description: Photographs taken circa 1880s by James Ring, photographer based in Greymouth. Scenes in Greymouth and nearby include views of severe flooding (p 3-5, 7); loading ships at the wharf showing hydraulic cranes raising hoppers of coal, and rolling stock laden with coal for transportation. Three shipping photographs including the SS Gerda wrecked on the Greymouth Breakwater in June 1888; the SS Mawhera ashore on North Beach, Greymouth in 1886, and the SS Rosamond crossing the Greymouth Bar. Beyond Greymouth views include the Grey River, Rocky Island, Brunnerton and the Brunnerton Bridge, and the West Coast Road. Then views of Lake Brunner, Refuge Island and Mitchell Falls. The Teremakau [now Taramakau] River is next, one view showing the road bridge, and one showing the flying fox (wire bridge) leading over to the Teremakau Hotel. These are followed by scenes along the Otira Gorge, including Warnock's Nob, Westley's Creek (Wesley Creek), and Starvation Point, before reaching Porter's Pass, Broken River, Arthur's Pass and the Devil's Punch Bowl Falls. The last sequence show Grasmere Station, Castle Hill Station (with one view of snow gates) and Craigieburn Station; the town of Cass; Bealey, Bealey Hotel, and Bealey Gorge, Lake Pearson and Lake Mapourika. West Coast album

Description: Photographs of the West Coast, with particular emphasis on bridges, gold mining activities, towns, and roads. Photographers mostly unidentified, but two definitely taken by John Tait (p 9-10), and one possibly taken by James Ring (p 20; identified from same photograph in different collection (PA7-51-05)). The bridges include Hungerfords Bridge and Thompson's Bridge, both over the Arahura River, and the Upper Bridge in the Otira Gorge. There is also a view of the Kaniere [i.e. Kanieri] punt for crossing the river. Views of gold mining and mining towns include the Hohonu Water Race Company's flume at Greenstone; the Great Western Company's fluming at Kaniere [i.e. Kanieri]; mining towns at Donoghues and Redman's; Ross; Goldsborough; the Kohinoor claim; and Napoleon Hill, Ahaura, showing various businesses along a narrow street including the Casino de Venise, Baillie Bootmaker, Scandinavian Hotel and the Victoria & Sydney Hotel. A number of views of Hokitika include the town from various angles; Dobson's Memorial (to roading engineer George Dobson who was murdered in 1866); the cemetery with a view of Archibald Bonar Junior's tombstone; the Old Post Office; the Hokitika Wharf; "cutting through the sandspit, Hokitika Bar, Sunday morning 1867"; and the Hokitika River with vessels ashore in 1866.
