Description: Richmond's letters to his wife Emily in Auckland are dated 28 August 1857 and 6 September 1857. The former describes a voyage from Auckland to Wellington on the `Wonga Wonga, the later describes his visit to Wellington and the Hutt, and people he visited. Publication - Extracts from the originals are published in G H Scholefield's edition of `Richmond-Atkinson papers' (vol 1 pp 295, 301) Source of title - Supplied title Christopher William Richmond was born in London in 1821 and admitted to the bar in 1847. He married Emily Elizabeth Atkinson in 1852 and later that year they emigrated to New Plymouth along with other members of the Richmond and Atkinson families. In 1855 he was elected to the House of Representatives and joined the ministry of Stafford, holding a variety of positions, the most important being colonial treasurer and minister of native affairs. He knew almost nothing about Maori culture and land tenure and had no sympathy for Maori society. He introduced measurers to individualize Maori land title so that sale to settlers could be more easily facilitated and he played a part in the conflict that started the New Zealand wars in Taranaki. In 1861 he resumed his law career in Dunedin and later became a judge of the Supreme Court. Quantity: 1 folder(s) (2 items). Physical Description: Mss and transcripts

Description: 3 humorous drawings showing the Wainuiomata reservoir - "fact and fiction". In the first scene, a group of top-hatted men are having a congratulatory picnic with champagne, on completion of the work, with, below them, in cross-section a 'section showing the interior of the concrete race', showing a very crooked and cracked water-course. Behind the men are horses and a carriage. In the second scene, the Wainui Reservoir is shown - a very small lake - dubbed 'Fiction - the most magnificent water supply in the Southern Hemisphere'. The third scene, titled 'Fact - the way the water is conserved for the benefit of the ratepayers' shows a defective valve, with water spouting from every angle.
