Description: Photograph album containing outdoor views taken circa 1900-1905 by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in the Northland Region of New Zealand. Photographers unidentified but many possibly taken by Thomas Pringle who was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in 1901. Compiler of album unidentified. Some images have captions. Images mainly show outdoor views, including landscapes, buildings, beaches, industry (including logging and gum digging), and harbours. Some show people. Whangarei and Whangaroa Harbour feature. Despite the title of the album: 'Maori life and scenery', Maori people do not predominantly feature, except in a loose print taken by Thomas Pringle in circa 1905, showing three girls playing 'whai' string game, and some other prints showing Maori families and individuals. Other: All prints have an inscription "New Zealand Government and Tourist Department Protected 7.1.03", however 7 January is not the date the photographs were taken. It is likely to be the date the was registered/patented. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Backing board recto - On spine: "ZZ/P575/Photographs of Maori Life and Scenery" and "General Assembly New Zealand library" insignia. This insignia is also on the front of the album. Relationship complexity: This album relates to PA1-o-1884 and PA1-o-1885 which came to the library at the same time and belongs to the same series of albums which were from the Parliamentary Library. Description: Photograph album containing scenic views of mountain ranges in New Zealand taken circa 1900-1903, probably by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department. Photographers unidentified but some/all possibly taken by Thomas Pringle who was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in 1901. Compiler of album unidentified. One image has a caption, but others are unidentified. One photograph includes the caption "Misty morning, Clinton Valley, Te Anau, Milford Track" and the other photographs are of landscape scenes including mountains and lakes probably also in the Fiordland area. Also includes images of cabins/dwellings/tramping huts and steamships on a lake, possibly Lake Te Anau. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Backing board recto - On spine "ZZ P575" and "Photographs of Maori Life and Scenery" and the General Assembly Library insignia on spine as well as front of album. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks.
