Description: Photographs taken by John Dobree Pascoe and others in the Southern Alps. They include views of mountain ranges, glaciers and valleys; mountain huts and life enjoyed by the mountaineers. Most of the photographs are fully described, with names of people usually given with initials and surnames, or nicknames. Landscapes too, are mostly fully described, with peaks and routes traversed marked on the images. The album includes a map of the Rakaia-Mathias River area, drawn by E. Porter; a map of the "Three pass route" across the Southern Alps, drawn by Len Boot (p. 003); two extracts from the New Zealand Alpine Journal hand-written by J D Pascoe (from Vol. IV, no. 18, p. 209-210; and Vol. IV, no. 18, p. 213-214); and a photograph of a painting by A E Wildey, with caption "Artist's versin of Carrington Peak" (p. 028). Description: Photographs taken during Pascoe family holidays to Pelorous Sound and Te Towaka at the head of Hallam Cove. People in the images include family members, passengers on the mail launch from Picton, people waiting on jetties, and people associated with the farm at Te Towaka. There are views down onto the homestead at Te Towaka from the slopes of Mount Shewell, and images of farm activities. Many photographs are of the sounds and the hills surrounding them. A group of photographs in this collection continues on from the previous box. Though the rest were dated 1950/51, there are later images mixed in. They travelled extensivly around the western Pelorus Sound area returning from Te Towaka to Picton via Havelock. Description: This collection is made up of two groups of photographs. One group records a trip to Mount Ruapehu, probably in the late 1950s, with views of the mountain, the Tararua Tramping Club's Lodge, distant groups lined up in ski schools as well as close ups of the new skiers in action. Photographs John, Sara, and Anna Pascoe with friends Tom and Margaret at the Crater Lake. A sequence shows how a rescue team treats and transports an injured skier down the mountain. The second, Mount Egmont (Mount Taranaki) group dates from 1954, and is similar with group photographs of children and adults on skies, Sara outside an igloo, people walking up a slope roped together, and a large group outside a mountain hut. There are views of the mountain and surrounding countryside under snow, and details of snowy mountain slopes. Quantity: 35 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Comprises photocopy of work, `History of thermal fisheries', by Pascoe (1941), with covering note from him describing it as one of his major unpublished works and that it was lost for many years (1962). He discusses the introduction of trout in the Rotorua lakes and Taupo waters, control of the fisheries, collection of ova and hatchery operations, the old and new Rotorua hatcheries, Tongariro and Waikaremoana hatcheries, the destruction of ill fish and shags, tagging records, introduction of food for the trout, fry liberations, catches. He includes a bibliography, acknowledgements and index. Also a covering note from Pascoe to Andrew Sharp describing how he re-discovered the manuscript, had it microfilmed and a photocopy made from this. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. (See article at http://www/nzine.co.nz/features/wak.html) Many of the images show winter views including icicles formed on waterfalls, frozen spray on twigs, and one with frozen spume near the Otira Tunnel. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Photographs for the Oxford New Zealand Junior Encyclopaedia

Description: Most of the collection comprises prints collected during illustration research for The Oxford Junior New Zealand Encyclopedia (Published 1965), and prints actually used to illustrate the encyclopaedia. Other material includes prints of Mounts Everest and Makalu photographed in 1945, prints associated with John Pascoe's book "Great days of New Zealand Mountaineering," and a group of prints of the Haast Pass area of Westland. There are also negatives of a Wellington building on the Terrace being demolished in 1972, copy negatives taken from the prints of Mounts Everest and Makalu, and others relating to the Haast Pass area of Westland. Marlborough Sounds

Description: View of a Picton street followed by images in a sequence called "Half a day in a mail launch," which carries people, mail, and goods from Picton to locations in the Marlborough Sounds including Arapawa Island. There are photographs of many people including members of John Pascoe's family, and many more of the sounds, and the hills and mountains surrounding them. As well as the mail launch other ships feature. These include the inter island ferry, the "Orca" which is probably a whaling ship out of Tory Channel, and an aircraft carrier in Pelorus Sound. Though this group was dated 1958/59, there are images in it identical to those in a group dated 1951/52. Quantity: 86 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Alpine views in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers. Those named include Miss Marsden (no. 33), E.A. Fitzgerald, J.J. Kinsey, J. Lippe, A.S. Sutton-Turner, a member of Sun Newspapers Ltd (possibly McGregor?), R. Sanders and C. Beken. Two images of an unidentified mountain hut were taken by John Pascoe (in 1931) and Dorothy Pascoe (in 1944) showing the hut which had been in use since 1895, and was completely destroyed by erosion. There are early images (nos. 1-7, 20-22, and 41). No. 1. is a diorama of an ice cave in the Mueller Glacier; no. 2. shows three mountaineers (two older men greeting a younger man, two of whom are carrying ice picks, the man on the right possibly J.J. Kinsey); no. 3. is entitled ""In difficulties" Ollivier carrying Barrow as hor[ses in difficulties]" and no. 6. taken at the same time is entitled "Ollivier carrying Fitzgerald ashore. In difficulties in the Forks Stream", signed J.J. Kinsey and dated 13/7/[18]97 on the back. Nos. 4-5. were taken by E.A. Fitzgerald show Zurbriggen and Clark [i.e. Jack Clarke] on the summit of Haidinger, dated 14/7/[18]97 on the back. Image no. 20. shows five men holding ice-picks, standing in front of a stone wall with a tent behind at Separation Camp at the ehad of the Godley River; image no. 20 shows four men with heavily laden bicycles on a track with mountains behind. No. 41. shows two women wearing large hats sitting in the wire cage above the Hooker River (one possibly Freda Du Faur). One sequence shows aerial photographs of the Southern Alps, some of which were taken by a member of the Sun Newspapers. Another sequence (nos. 23-31) were taken by Arthur Seymout Sutton-Turner, many of which show the effects of storm clouds in the mountains. Image no. 33. (taken by Miss Marsden) shows the foot of the Unser Fritz Falls. Charles beken took images no. 36-40, showing The Minarets, serac on the Hochstetter Icefall, the bridge over the Tekapo River, and the Pukaki Bridge and lake with the accomodation house centre right. Image no. 34. (taken by R. Sanders) shows a disused logging railway with wooden sleepers, which leads into the mouth of a tunnel, surrounded by native bush. Image no. 42. was taken by W.A.
