Description: The top image, based on an original drawing by Sydney Parkinson, shows a pa on top of an arched rock surrounded almost entirely by water. There are canoes pulled up on the sloping shoreline at the right. The lower image, from an original drawing by John Webber in 1777, shows a group of Maori in the centre foreground, with a row of huts behind them. The background shows a view over a stretch of water and distant hills. Description: Two head and shoulders portraits of Maori menl, both with moko. The left-hand figure is seen full-face, the right-hand figure in profile From Malerische Reise um die Welt, derived from engravings after Louis De Sainson, who in turn derived his work from his own earlier engravings and drawings, from the drawings of Louis Lejeune and from the illustrations to Cook's voyages. Malerische Reise um die Welt was the German translation of Dumont d'Urville's 1834 publication Voyage pittoresque autour du monde. The right-hand figure is after Sydney Parkinson's 1784 engraving 'Head of Otegoongoon, son of a New Zealand chief, the face curiously tattooed. The left-hand figure is after Louis Auguste de Sainson's lithograph of 'Rangui, l'un des chefs de Shouraki' published in 1833. Description: Aquatint based on a drawing of Te Puta o te Paretauhinau Pa at Mercury Bay, Coromandel Peninsula. The drawing of the pa is by Herman Diedrich Sporing, Sir Joseph Banks' clerk; the canoe is copied from a drawing by Sydney Parkinson, the official artist aboard the Endeavour. The scene shows a long war canoe in the left foreground; an arched rock in the water behind the boat with a pa on top of it; two canoes pulled up on the bank to the right behind the arched rock and dense bush in the background. From an unknown Italian publication. One of the engravers of this publication was Biasioli (1790-1830). The pa shown was seen in November 1769. See Joppien & Smith.
