Description: The left page addresses the recipient Maxwell Walker on the eve of his departure for a visit to Europe, and thanks him for his contribution to literary culture in Ponsonby, especially among young men. The address mentions his membership of the Committee of Management of the Leys Institute, and its affiliated Literary and Debating Society, and Shakespeare and Rhetoric Club. His position as lecturer in Modern languages at the Auckland University College is also mentioned. At the top of the left page is an illustration of the Leys Institute Library in Ponsonby Auckland, and a general view of Auckland Harbour with North Head and Rangitoto. Bothe pages have ornate borders. The address is signed by Thomson Leys of the Leys Institute, John Gittos and one other (Literary and Debating Society), and T H Wells, H Hemus, and E T Hart (Shakespeare and Rhetoric Club). Description: Postcards show photographic scenes of Auckland, flanked by coloured illustrations of the New Zealand and American flags. Some cards show symbolic figures of America and Zealandia meeting. The Auckland scenes shown are: Queen Street, Auckland - looking south Parnell, Auckland, from Mount Eden - showing entrance to harbour British war ship "Powerful" in Auckland Harbour Albert Park, Auckland Onehunga and Manukau Harbour (Auckland's West coast port) South side Custom St East, Auckland - looking east Wellesley Street, Auckland - shewing the Free Library and Art Gallery Auckland, from St Matthew's Tower This series of cards was issued to celebrate to arrival of the American "Great White" Fleet in Auckland in August 1908. Part of the Moran Collection, but likely to be by another artist; signed W Palmer in pencil at lower right.
