A man next to him has a suitcase reading, Auckland, and is commenting on the rain. Refers to the cricket test match between New Zealand and England played at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, February 1978. The match was plagued by rain, however a result was achieved with New Zealand winning by 72 runs. Also refers to drought like conditions in Auckland at the time.
