Royal tour 1901

Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Other ceremonies are associated with the presentation of war-medals; the laying of foundation stones (Victoria College for Maori Girls, Parnell, Auckland), the Wellington Town Hall, and the Queens Memorial Statue in Dunedin); and the march past and inspection of various guards, troops and veterans. One photograph shows Lord Ranfurly in Auckland, reading the proclamation extending the boundaries of the colony to include the Cook Islands (p 16). Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1933 and 1958. There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48). Description: The unveiling of a monument to Hau Moe Werangi and Pita Kena (d 1903) at Pouto, Kaipara District, photographed during the visit of Lord Ranfurly's party to the Far North in March 1904, by Malcolm Ross. James Carroll is standing in the foreground, to the right of centre, with Lord Ranfurly to his right, under the umbrella. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - Unveiling the Statue at Pouto The vice-regal party sailed from the Bay of Islands to Whangarei in HMCS Iris. After a day in Whangarei they drove to the Wairoa River, where they took a steamer to Dargaville. From here they took a steam tug to Pouto, near the North Head of the Kaipara Harbour.
