Description: Copy of an 1870 cadastral map of land blocks within the Manawatū-Wairarapa Block, from the Tararua Ranges eastwards to the Puketoi Range and Castle Point Block. Blocks indicate name, number and acreage, and include Kaihinu, Pahiatua, Te Pukahu, Mongorongo, Eketāhuna, Ngatapu, Ihuraua, Manawatū, Mangahauo, Puketoi, Tautane, Makure. Two blocks include note 'not passed the [Native Land] Court' (Kaihanga, Mangahao no. 3; 7,000 acres and Puketoi no. 6; 3,200 acres). Includes annotations such as the addition of Mangakao no. 2 block in 1881. Includes names of rivers, streams. Note on map reads: 'Produced before the N[ative] L[and] Court at Masterton Wairarapa September 7th 1871'. [Signed] J Rogan'. Quentin Hooper Smith - Te Pa (Waitahora)

Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Quentin Hooper Smith accompanied by supporting land documents; history of land ownership, recipe for Emma Hooper Smith's Christmas cake; photographs of farm and family Te Pa comprises 2 sections, one that formed part of the Education Reserve and the other balloted in 1902. Samuel Hooper Smith bought the latter in 1903, at which time it was named Loch Catherine. He renamed the farm Hyndhope and went into partnership with Mrs Ida Lane of Chesterhope in 1907. The 1200 acre Education reserve section (Te Pa) was managed by Samuel for William Nelson from 1901 to 1903 (until he bought Hyndhope). The name Te Pa had by this time come to denote the amalgamated properties. In 1907 Samuel and Mrs Lane bought `Te Pa' for £3000. The partnership lasted until 1924 when Samuel took it over. His son Eion took over the property after WWII, later passing to his son Quentin. In 2007 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Contains official copies of correspondence relating to land claims from Te Tai Tokerau and Pewhairangi (i.e. Bay of Islands, the word is a transliteration), Waikato and Whanganui. Includes various documents relating to Whanganui giving extensive lists of names for the purchase of guns, powder and flint by Whanganui Maori; lists of Whanganui Maori working for the Regional Magistrate and their salaries; census of friendly natives, Whanganui district. The last document is the original of the deed by which Nopera Parakareao and other Te Rarawa chiefs sold the Muriwhenua lands of Te Aupouri to the Rev Richard Taylor, witnessed by William Gilbert Puckey, 20 January 1840. A translation of this in Taylor's hand is in MS-Papers-0075-106E. Written only two weeks before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi to secure private property rights for Taylor (before the arrival of Hobson and the signing of the Treaty) but the publication of Gipps's proclamations of 14 January 1840 invalidated the sale.
