Description: Slides of images collected by Judith Binney relating to her research on Rua Kenana Hepetipa. Some photographs taken in 1981. Others taken circa 1981. Photographer unidentified, possibly Binney. Six images show a red flag labelled with the words 'Rua Tupua'. Four show wooden carvings representing Tangata Iti and Paikea (with tuku tuku panels and photographs alongside) inside the house Toi kai rakau at Waikirikiri marae in Ruatoki. Further images comprise one of a wooden carved statue in Rotora showing a figure holding a lizard, and one looking towards a small house in a rural area. Binney has identified this last image as 'Rua. Whare Karakia. Te Teko'. Description: Shows a general view of the crowds at the tangi, with a hill in the background. There are many flags or banners raised, bearing the words: Takoto, Ko Mahuta te Kingi, Kingi o te Rangimarie, Tamatera, MNKR. One part of the crowd may be performing a haka with raised rifle butts. A section of the crowd is labelled "Women in green leaves", and another group is labelled "Mourners". A group of "Pakehas" is noted at the extrem left distance. Description: Shows a closer view than that on pages 48-49. The crowd is seated looking inwards towards the central area and tents beneath banners. A figure in leaf headdress stands at the far right foreground, and a man with two feathers in a haedband stands on the far left. The flags or banners (seen from the back so that the words are in mirrored form) Tamatera, Ko Waikato, Takoto, Ko Mahuta Te Kingi, Kingi Mahuta Tawhiao Potatau Te Wherowhero, Nga Wahine Rikiriki a Tapaue. Description: Shows an event of 1860 in which British soldiers are attacking the wooden palisades of a pa on a small hill, with hand-to-hand fighting and rifle-shooting in the foreground. A large flag flies from the palisades. Mount Taranaki is shown in the left distance. From an illustration published in the "Illustrated Melbourne post" 20 October 1863, and possibly the "Illustrated Sydney news". The Waireka pa was attacked in 1860. Drawings & Prints has a file print of the image from the "Illustrated Melbourne post", entitled "Storming the Waireka Pah, Taranaki - from a sketch by our special artist".
