Artist unknown :[Rangitoto and North Head from Grafton Gully. 1880s?]
Date: 1880 - 1890
From: Various artists :[Album of watercolours, cards and published pictures, including scenes in New Zealand and European countries, belonging to Cherie Templer (nee Connell)]. 1830-1890
Reference: E-943-q-008-1
Description: Shows Rangitoto Island, North Head and Mt Victoria, the Waitemata Harbour with sailing ships and a steam ship in the distance, painted from the top of Grafton Gully, near where the Connell family lived in Khyber Pass Road. The bush is dense in the foreground, and houses in fenced sections can be seen on the inclines either side of the gully, with more houses in the middle distance. The painting is on a piece of "Goodall's Bristol Board", the stamp of which appears in the bottom left corner Unsigned and undated. Very similar in aspect and detail to John Guise Mitford's 'Entrance to the harbour, Auckland' (E-216-f-041), painted in or about 1843 and which appears in the Hobson Album. Information about that painting states that one of the houses on the right of the picture (and likely on the right of this album's picture) is the home of the Poatmaster General, William Connell, Cherie's father See also E-216-f-111, [View from above Grafton Gully showing graveyard and Government House, Auckland. 1843], also attributed to Mitford, which again shows an almost identical view to Auckland Harbour from Grafton Gully, with the house on the right possibly being that of the Connell family Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour and gum arabic on paper, 160x 194 mm pasted to page of album 265 x 220 mm Provenance: Donation: Mrs E. J. Templer, UK (formerly of Tasmania), September 2012
