Photographs of England and the Pori area, New Zealand

Description: Most of the New Zealand images relate to the Nelson family, their farms, farm houses, and farm buildings in the Pori area, north eastern Wairarapa, and scenic views of the area such as the Makuri River, a waterfall at Tiraumea, Annedale north of Tainui, the Pori Bridge, and native forest. The images of the farm houses include building a stable and buggy house, views of the yard with washing drying, a hen run, and a view of the dining room at "Ruatea". Four images are of Hugh Nelson's whare which was the first building constructed at "Taumata". There are three photographs of local Maori, one of bullock teams at Tiraumea, snow covered landscape at "Nga Mahanga", a picnic group with horses and buggys, and many views of the countryside from the Nelson farms showing cleared, partially cleared and forested land, much of it covered with the gaunt trunks of burnt off bush. There are group photographs of the families and friends. As well as the men these include women (wives?) Lucy, Katie, and Winifred, and children, Robert, Frances, and Dorothea. Other new Zealand houses include two probably located at Annedale with the names "Te Hoe" and "Manawa", and another in Featherston called "Newstead". The English images are of family and friends and various places, houses and churches which include Dover, Tunbridge Wells, Broadstairs, Minehead, Ostend, Clovelly, Lynton, Lymouth, Doon Valley, Meywingen, St Saviours Leeds, and Chester Cathedral Arrangement: Loose prints originally in this album can be found at PAColl-7868-1 Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Description: Album opens with two images of Denniston buildings all of which are houses except for a church. There are some views of the surrounding countryside as seen from the plateau and a view of the roperoad railway with trucks crossing the plateau in winter. Two waterfalls are probably scenic features photographed from the horse track connecting Denniston with the coastal plain. Other images relate to Christchurch. These include boating on the River Avon, and groups of people photographed standing on two different bridges, one of them in the Botanic Garden. From Wellington there is an image of the Skyline tea kiosk at the top of the Kelburn cable car. Four images record people on a beach backed by vertical sandstone cliffs beyond which can be seen what looks like gum trees. Description: This collection contains the contents of two albums. First album group relates to Pauatahanui, Porirua. Includes - Unidentified house. Grave stone of Len Walker who died in 1897 aged 100 years. View of St Adan's Anglican Church. View of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church. Views of an overgrown cemetery. Second album is mostly views of the Government centre and environs, Wellington. Most of this material dates from the late 1940s to the early 1950s and includes - The wooden Government building (now Law School). The Centotaph. Turnbull House (then the Alexander Turnbull Library). Wellington Railway Station. Bowen House. Magistrates Court. Bowen Street. Lambton Quay. Bunny Street. Molesworth Street. Government Printing Office. Parliament buildings and grounds. The old High Court building. Brick store on Waterloo Quay (now apartments). Hotel Waterloo. Defence Department building, Bunny Street (demolished about 1994). Other Wellington photographs taken by the Evening Post in November 1964 include a view of Manners Street, and two photographs of Wellington traffic. There is one photograph of houses and gardens in Regent Street, Newtown, dated 9 August 1962. This is part of a group of views of a site for Wellington City Council housing taken before demolition for that project began. Earlier photographs include - View of Kaikoura, ca 1910.
