Description: Maori children in a waka, photographed during the visit of Lord Ranfurly's party to the Far North, March 1904, by Malcolm Ross. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - A water frolic The vice-regal party left Te Teko on the morning of 18 March 1904, reaching Auckland (by coach and train) the same evening. They then boarded HMCS Iris and cruised up the east coast. After first landing at the Doubtless Bay cable station, they returned south to Russell. (Source: Malcolm Ross, "Through Tuhoe Land"). Description: Wallet of twelve concertina-folded photographs of Rotorua showing the Bath House, the Municipal Buildings, Fairy Springs, Pohutu Geyser, Boiling mud, Guide Rangi, Maori babies, entrance to Whaka[rewarewa], Ohinemutu from Hospital Hill, Poi dancers, "Tama-te-Kapua" carved house, and the entrance to the Government Grounds. Dated 1940s, as the Municipal buildings were newly built in 1940 when the Rotorua Library moved in there. No corroborating documentation in Wises directories 1930-1950s. Some of the photographs were from the collection of Andrea's maternal grandfather (Marilyn's father) Mostyn Phair Thompson, who was interested in history and amassed a private collection, much of it lent for the replica colonial cottage that was at the Rotorua Museum from 1969.
