Description: View photographed in March 1900 by Daniel Manders Beere looking north across Auckland Harbour from the vicinity of Admiralty House across Queens Wharf (left of centre) towards Birkenhead and Northcote, showing crowds in foreground surveying the scene below and crowds on waterfront near several ships bearing streamers, probably gathered on the occasion of the departure of the 4th Auckland Contingent (the Auckland troop of New Zealand Rough Riders) to Wellington en route to the South African War. Visible centre left is the smoking ruins of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company Ltd building next to the Northern Steamship Company Ltd building on Quay Street East. Dated from other photographs in sequence, and from the presence of electric power lines, and from the date of the Quay Street fire on 1 March 1900. The building was half owned by the New Zealand Shipping Company.
