Description: Men sharpening shearers' blades on a grindstone at Grasmere Station, near Cass, Canterbury Region, photographed by John Dobree Pascoe in 1944. Alan Rose stands on the right. Caption - written by John Pascoe: "In the back country, that is in the mountainous or inaccessible parts of New Zealand shearing is still done by hand with 'the blade', though most North Island or low country stations use machines. Description: Reg Ferguson, a shepherd at Grasmere Station, near Cass, Canterbury, in 1944. Shows him outdoors, eating a sandwich, during a break from mustering. Photograph taken by John Dobree Pascoe. Other - Pascoe's title from the Photographic Archive file at 6/1/30, for the set of photographs at 1/4-000880 to 000913, reads: "Sheep country life in New Zealand" Caption - Pascoe's caption for this image in Photographic Archive file 6/1/30 reads: "Reg, who took the bottom beat of the muster, grabs a sandwich during a spell. He is a handy man anywhere; can manage a hotel, stalk deer, handle pack horses, build a hut, as well as being competent in sheep station routine." Reg Ferguson was a shepherd, deer hunter and publican of the Bealey Hotel. From a well known Springfield family, Reg and his brothers worked at Grasmere during the 1930s and 1940s.
