Description: Views of the 1927 Royal Tour of New Zealand by the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Includes displays viewed and events attended by the royal couple, as well as travelling between towns by car and train. Places visited include: the Royal New Zealand Air Force at Wigram airport, Canterbury University, the view over Lyall Bay from Truby King's house, Dunedin war memorial and the war memorial at Waitaki Boys' High School, Government House in Wellington. Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers, taken in central North Island, and Otago and Southland regions, circa 1900s and 1910s. Some of the images are related to railways, including North Island scenes of the first passenger trip on 14th February 1909, during which the train stopped on the Raurimu Spiral because of a lack of engine power to haul it; the railway station at Longburn; a locomotive owned by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company; various engines including one image showing a J Class locomotive and an A Class locomotive with the caption "Note the difference in 20 years". South Island trains are shown in the Catlins District, including the construction of the Catlins River Railway, the Houipapa Quarry on the Catlins River Extension, loading wagons in the Balclutha ballast pit, the viaduct across the Catlins River at Houipapa, the Clutha Railway Bridge, and the Houipapa terminus on the Catlins River Railway. The North Island scenic views include the areas around Lake Rotorua, the Government Sanatorium at Rotorua, Sophia's Whare, a group of Maori boys diving for pennies, Whakarewarewa, Okere and Ohakune. Scenic views in the South Island are mostly around Dunedin (including Telford's country house in the Balclutha District), Clutha River, Balclutha, and the Catlins, including flax swamps and flax mills in the Catlins District. Many of the images are taken with an emphasis on atmosphere, includingGathering storm", "Beside the winding river", "Outward bound", "A heavy pull" and "A calm day". Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Southland Regions, by unidentified photographers. All the locations are well identified. Some of the images are related to railways, including railway tunnels (e.g. The Caversham Tunnel when under construction circa 1909), and the Hunts Road Tunnel; the Clutha Railway Bridge; the Wingatui Signal Box; the Balclutha Railway Station, railway yards, and sales-yards; railway barns; D-class engine (New Zealand Railways steam-engine No. 355); the Owaka Express; and bush tramway tracks, one sawmill typical of small mills in the Catlins area. Many of the images are taken with an emphasis on atmosphere, including sunsets, stormy days on the coast near Dunedin, evening at Ocean Beach, storm clouds at Lawyer's Head, and "By beach and sand-hill". Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1915 and 1916. Many of the images show various aspects of logging in Piha and Karekare. Views include the Piha Tramway, bush railway inclines, scenes of lumbermen cutting down kauri trees and cross-cutting felled trees, transportation of logs by bullock teams and horse-drawn rail wagons, the Piha timber camp and mill and men at everyday activities in camp buildings and in their workmen's huts. Other sections of the album show views of Petone, and Godber's family (his wife, Laura Godber, and two children, Phyllis and William (Bill)); views of the central North Island; farming in the Mendip Hills (Canterbury); and views of Trentham. Description: Collection of photographs used by Dewar in his book Chaslands, a number of which include extensive notes. The photographs are of: Harry Croft's hut on Wallace Beach; Heathfield Dairy Factory with six wagons loaded with urns outside (the notes name all the men in the photograph); Waikawa sawmill tramline with timber truck; Arthur and Fred Croft outside their house at Chaslands; Chaslands School (the notes name all the teachers 1895-1950); MacLennan Railway Station showing the cleared hillsides around it; a car at the far end of the bridge near Chaslands; the boys and girls of Ratanui School with their teacher George Dewar ca 1935; the Chaslands rugby football team with Fred Croft, Donald Little, Bandy Kini, George Dewar, Kangaroo Bill Wells and Herb Ottenshaw (others not known); the junction of McLennan and Tahakopa Rivers showing the ford from Owaka to Chaslands (with notes); the first passenger train on the Catlins extension line at MacLennan Station; Tautuku Bay from the top of MacLennan's Hill; two of men in Cathedral Caves; bush scenes around Chaslands; Houipapa Valley from Gibb's Hill with Catlins Lake in the distance; white pines near Owaka; the buried forest north of Poimawea; a car on the road at Smillies Quarry; Curio Bay at Waikawa; and Mount Samson with the bridge over the Chaslands River in the foreground. Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Wellington Regions, by an unidentified photographer. The South Island images include Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, Arrowtown, Paradise, Diamond Lake, Balclutha, the Clutha and Catlins Rivers, and scenes in Dunedin including the Botanical Gardens. A large number show the Shotover River and details relating to gold mining, including a miner's stone whare on the bank of the river and two views showing the waters of the Shotover escaping from a tunnel driven for mining purposes to allow the river to be diverted from its natural course. The North Island views are all in the Wellington region, particularly views of the harbour with its various shipping activities, with many ships named. The latter part of the album consists of about 13-17 small photographs attached to each of 6 pages, many of family and friends, identified only by Christian name. The house at No. 3 Aorangi Terrace is shown (lived in by Ernest Somerville, importer, in 1905-1906; and by George Jefferson Belt, tally clerk, in 1909), and a house in Hawkestone Street.
