Description: Major-General James Melville Babington with two chiefs, photographed during the visit of Lord Ranfurly's party to the Far North, March 1904, by Malcolm Ross. The man on the right is Take Take Rangitupu of Ranana, Wanganui River. The man on the left is wearing a korowai (tag cloak). The photograph was probably taken at a kainga inland from Mangonui, where a hui to farewell Lord Ranfurly was held. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - Men of War - past and present. General Babington and two maori warriors. The vice-regal party left Te Teko on the morning of 18 March 1904, reaching Auckland (by coach and train) the same evening. They then boarded HMCS Iris and cruised up the east coast. After landing at the Doubtless Bay cable station, they "proceeded inland from Mangionui to a village where a native meeting was held for the purpose of bidding farewell to Lord Ranfurly." Description: Views around the Taupo Tongariro area, including Mounts Ngaruahoe and Tongariro, Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, Lake Taupo and Wairakei. There is one image of the Maori interior of Tom Ryan's whare, one of the Terraces Hotel at Lake Taupo, and others of various buildings at the Spa Hotel (Taupo), including the interior of the dining room. This building was the meeting house Te Tiki o Tamamutu, purchased by John Joshua (proprietor of the Spa Hotel) for use as a smoking room and dining room for the hotel guests. Several images show unidentified Maori women in posed groups, or working with flax, and in one case a woman using a treadle sewing machine. An unidentified man is seen, in several images, fishing at pools below the Aratiatia Rapids. Photographs taken by Auckland Star photographers around the turn of the 19th-20th century.
