Description: Pamphlet advertising the attractions of the Chateau Tongariro and the Tongariro area. One side shows the cover, with a photograph of a golfing couple outside the Chateau. Other panels show the Tawhai Falls, a chef serving fish, and distances from the main North Island centres to the Chateau. The inside shows a central oval panel with text, surrounded by black and white photographs of guests using the hotel, skiers in bikinis on the slopes, a descending skier and a fisherman. Recto shows the cover panel with a seated blonde woman with a drink at a small table, and a photograph of dancers in the Chateau's ballroom. Also shows a location map, a list of interesting trips, an illustration ("where the white sport reigns") showing a mountain slope with chairlift marked, with two photographs of skiers. Description: Photographs of Christchurch and environs, taken by the New Zealand Tourist and Publicity Department circa 1900s. Views outside Christchurch City include the stone monument to Kai Tahu on the site of the Kaiapohi Pa, commemorating those who died in attacks by Te Rauparaha and his northern followers Lyttelton wharf and harbour. Christchurch views include the Avon River; central city street scenes; Cathedral Square with the Cathedral and Warner's Hotel, and people using various forms of transport (horse-drawn vehicles and bicycles); the Cathedral and Canterbury Museum (both interior and exterior views). Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P.
