By: Mundy, Godfrey Charles, 1804-1860

Description: View from the shore with flax bushes and taller trees on both sides, looking towards Rangitoto and North Head, with two large and one small ship in the harbour. The two larger ships are probably H.M.S. Dido and H.M.S. Calliope, mentioned in Mundy's text in "Our Antipodes" vol 3, p. 72. although one of them could be the Inflexible, on which Mundy travelled to and around New Zealand. G.C.Mundy describes the view depicted here in vol 2 of "Our antipodes" (1852) p.71-72 in a section entitled "Voyage to New Zealand". He was on board the ship Inflexible and arrived in Auckland on 11 December 1847, but may have drawn the scene later in December or in early January, during his stay in Auckland. Inscriptions: Backing board recto - beneath image - By G.C.Mundy. Middle Entrance Auckland Harbour. [possibly written by somebody other than the artist, since the Library's two views by Louisa Mundy also had the inscription "by G.C.Mundy" overlooking Louisa Mundy's initials on the drawings and the attribution to her as the artist of the published lithograph versions in "Our antipodes"] Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil 175 x 259 mm
