Description: A pioneer cottage nestled amongst trees, with hills behind. Two women hanging washing on fence, a small boy playing with a dog, and two cows. The house is that of farmer John Lavin, and one of the women is likely to be his wife, the child with the dog most probably his oldest son Hawles, aged about 3. The dog pictured is possibly Rover, identified in A-235-009. The Lavin family were all killed by Maori on 10 April 1869. There were three children by that date, Hawles, aged 11, Miles aged 8 and Henry aged 3. Other Titles - Front view of our house. Description: Shows a bearded pipe-smoking man sitting on a wooden case in a house. It has rafters and posts supporting a central ridge pole, and there are baskets hanging off a central beam between two posts. A barrel at the right serves as a surface for bottles and containers. A tin bath(?) hangs on the far wall next to a bunk and wood storage. Printed as an Alexander Turnbull Library print in 1980. Description: Shows Marion Sim, wife of John Sim, feeding horses. The public house, or hotel was run by brothers John and Andrew Sim. Exhibited in 'Two centuries of New Zealand landscape art' Exhibition at Auckland City Art Gallery, 2 February - 22 April 1990. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. According to N.Z. Historic Places, no. 46, Dec 1993, p. 17 "There has been a public house at Mohaka since 1859 or before. The first was established by John and Marion Sim on the south side of the mouth of the Mohaka river, opposite the large Maori community centred round the Te Huke and Hiruharama Pa. In 1859, when the postal service was established between Napier and Wairoa, the pub was already there. The Sims were running a ferry and operated the post office from the pub.
