Description: Shows a group of three Maori whare, with figures sitting and standing outside. There is a line with objects hanging from it, probably food hanging for drying or smoking. Beyond the bush in the background is the distinctive peak of Castle Rock. Accompanied by backing board with title details and (incorrect) name of artist. Description: Shows a farmhouse on the brow of a hill, with bushy hill outlines beyond. The buildings, one double-storeyed and one single-storeyed with verandah, are behind a broken fence line. In the foreground are two cabbage trees at the left, and a line of low plants across the foreground. Handwritten notes on the backing board identify Mr Preece as the Reverend J Preece, a missionary. Preece worked in the Thames-Coromandel area until he moved to the Urewera in 1847. (Backing board retained.)
