Description: See also B-119-001 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Sunrise. T.S.M.; Verso - [Letter, now detached from back of painting] March 28. 1865 Sylvia Readhill Monkhouse. "Hen & Chickens" Island - off the E Coast of New Zealand between Little Omaha & Parkiri Kiri. The Island is a 1/4 of a mile from our house. Mother's bedroom window faced a lovely view of green then beach & then sea & then the Island. You were born near midnight, a little before - early in the morning of the 28th of Mch. Mother was sitting up looking out of the window & noticed the rising sun blazing on the Island; she called out, Tom here is a lovely view of the Island in full glory of the rising sun - Father on seeing it rushed for his Block & water colours, & made this sketch so it is just as old as you - I have another sketch of it [see B-119-001] in the [illegible] which looks miserable - all the shadows are dark & gloomy - but I think the one I send you suited your Naturity - which I find to be the 2nd decace [?] of Saggittarius - ruled by the Moon and Jupiter - so you can get from this just what you want [illegible] the Island.; Verso - [Note detached from letter] Letter written by Madeline Stewart to her sister Sylvia (Daughter of Thomas Stewart Monkhouse) Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Pencil & watercolour 158 x 216 mm Provenance: Family of the artist
