Description: Includes seven watercolour drawings on greeting cards and envelopes to Mr A Brian Scanlan, editor of the Taranaki Herald. Also includes a copy of an illustration for Messenger's book "Children of the forest" (1948?). Includes four monotone wash drawings of scenes from his Paritutu series, 1953-1956, and two photographs (one of one of those original monotone drawings and one additional one). Includes a newsclipping of an article by Brian Scanlan: "Messenger story colourful". Taranaki herald, 12 March 1983, page 2; a letter of thanks from Messenger to Scanlan, dated 18 January 1961. A ship visible in Porirua Harbour in the background and soldiers standing in line to attention, with tents in the distance. By the gate in the foreground, a Maori woman is selling produce to a group of soldiers, while another man with fish in a kete, and a woman with potatoes await their turn. Two civilians watch the proceedings from the right, one smoking a pipe.
