Description: A Maori family, in traditional Maori clothing, reclining at the top of a cliff in the foreground, with an extensive view beyond of Palliser Bay, the sandbank formed at the mouth of the Ruamahanga River and Okorewa Pa, also at the mouth of the river on the flat land below. Description: Shows lake in distance; party hunting wild pig in foreground with dogs, worrying the pig. The party includes a Maori man dressed in traditional costume. In: Brees S C Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. Plate 4, No 10, text p. 9. Brees stresses the value of the flat land in this area, its quality for farming and the building of part of a road across the Rimutaka Range. Brees spent some time in the Wairarapa surveying until the New Zealand Company suspended its operations in 1844, so the engraving is presumably based on a drawing completed between 1842 (Brees' year of arrival in New Zealand) and 1844. A European man with swag, walking stick and dog is walking towards the palisaded pataka and potato garden on the headland in front of him. Taupo Pa (Plimmerton) is on the left.
